πŸ©ΊπŸ’™

Asthma is one of the most common long-term conditions in children and young people, but there are 4 simple things that can help keep asthma under control and reduce the risk of serious attacks:

βœ… Have an up-to-date Asthma Action Plan
βœ… Use inhalers correctly and check inhaler technique regularly
βœ… Attend asthma reviews every year (and after an asthma attack)
βœ… Be aware of asthma triggers, including air pollution

Taking these simple steps can help children and young people stay well, stay active, and reduce the chance of needing urgent medical care.

If your child has asthma and is due a review, please contact the practice to arrange an appointment.

πŸ’™ Aged 18–64 and living with a long-term health condition? Your flu vaccination could be more important than you realise.

Flu is not simply a bad cold. If you have certain health conditions, you are more likely to become seriously unwell, need hospital treatment or experience a worsening of your existing condition β€” even if it is usually well controlled and you feel well.

You are eligible for a free NHS flu vaccination if you have a qualifying condition such as:

πŸ”Ή a long-term breathing condition, including COPD, emphysema, bronchitis or asthma requiring regular steroid inhalers/tablets or previous hospital treatment
πŸ”Ή chronic heart or vascular disease
πŸ”Ή chronic kidney disease
πŸ”Ή chronic liver disease
πŸ”Ή diabetes or adrenal insufficiency
πŸ”Ή a neurological condition, such as Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy
πŸ”Ή a history of stroke or TIA
πŸ”Ή a learning disability
πŸ”Ή reduced immunity because of an illness, medication or treatment
πŸ”Ή a condition affecting your spleen, including sickle cell disease, or if you have had your spleen removed
πŸ”Ή a BMI of 40 or above

This list is not exhaustive, and eligibility can depend on the severity of your condition or treatment. Please contact us if you think you may qualify but are unsure.

Being younger than 65 does not mean flu cannot affect you seriously. Vaccination is the best protection available and must be repeated each year because flu strains change and protection reduces over time.

πŸ“… The NHS adult flu vaccination programme begins on 1 October.

If we have invited you, please use the booking link in your invitation to arrange your appointment. If you believe you are eligible but have not received an invitation, please contact the practice.

πŸŸ β˜€οΈ Another Amber Heat Health Alert – please take care in the heat

Here we go again! With another spell of very hot weather and an Amber Heat Health Alert in place, it’s important that we all take a few simple steps to stay safe.

πŸ’§ Drink plenty of fluids – don’t wait until you feel thirsty
🏑 Keep your home as cool as possible – close curtains or blinds on sunny windows
🌳 Seek shade, particularly between 11am and 3pm
πŸ‘’ Protect yourself from the sun with light clothing, a hat, sunglasses and SPF30+
πŸš— Never leave babies, children, older people or pets in a parked car

❀️ And please look out for each other.

Hot weather can be particularly difficult for older people, babies and young children, pregnant women and people with long-term health conditions. A quick call or knock on the door to check someone is keeping cool and drinking enough could make a real difference.

🌑️ Feeling dizzy, weak, sick, very thirsty or unusually tired? These can be signs of heat exhaustion. Move somewhere cool, drink fluids and cool yourself down.

🚨 Confusion, a very high temperature, seizures or stopping sweating despite being very hot can indicate heatstroke – call 999.

Enjoy the sunshine, but please stay safe, keep cool and look out for one another. β˜€οΈπŸ’™

πŸ’ Thinking about pregnancy?
πŸ’™ Mental health advice is available before pregnancy

If you are thinking about becoming pregnant, an early conversation with us may be helpful if you:

🧠 currently have, or have previously experienced, moderate to severe or complex mental health difficulties

πŸ’™ may be at higher risk of becoming seriously unwell during pregnancy or after giving birth

πŸ’Š take medication for a mental health condition

🌱 This does not mean that you should not become pregnant.

The aim is to help you make informed choices and plan the right care and support for you. A brief conversation before pregnancy can make a significant difference for both you and your baby.

🀝 The Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service offers a one-off preconception consultation. This provides an opportunity to consider your individual circumstances, discuss any risks and receive specialist advice.

You do not need to wait until you are pregnant to ask for support.

πŸ’Š Please do not stop or change any mental health medication without first speaking to a healthcare professional.

πŸ’¬ If you think this may apply to you, please contact the practice for a confidential and supportive discussion.

β˜€οΈ Hot weather is on its way AGAIN – enjoy it safely! β˜€οΈ

We all love a bit of sunshine, but hot weather can be dangerous for some people, especially:

πŸ‘Ά Babies and young children
πŸ‘΅ Anyone aged 65 and over
❀️ People with heart, lung, kidney or other long-term health conditions
🀰 Pregnant women

πŸ’§ Stay well in the heat by remembering to:

πŸ₯€ Drink plenty of water (even if you don't feel thirsty)
🏑 Keep your home cool by closing curtains or blinds during the day
🌳 Stay in the shade where possible, especially between 11am and 3pm
πŸ‘’ Wear loose, light-coloured clothing, a hat and sunglasses
🧴 Apply SPF30+ sunscreen regularly
πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day

πŸ’› Please also check on friends, neighbours and relatives who may struggle to keep cool or stay hydrated. A quick phone call or visit could make a real difference.

πŸš— Never leave babies, children, older adults or pets in a parked car, even for a few minutes.

⚠️ Know the signs of heat exhaustion:
Feeling dizzy, weak, sick, unusually tired or very thirsty? Move to a cool place, drink fluids and cool down.

🚨 Heatstroke is a medical emergency. If someone has a high temperature, becomes confused, stops sweating or has a seizure, call 999 immediately.

Let's all enjoy the sunshine while looking after ourselves and those around us. πŸŒžπŸ’™

🌑️ RED HEAT ALERT – Please Stay Safe in the Hot Weather πŸ”΄β˜€οΈ

Alert is in effect from 24 June 2026 at 01:00am to 25 June 2026 at 11:00pm - but it is super hot already!

The UK will be under a Red Heat Alert, meaning the hot weather could seriously affect health β€” especially for older adults, babies and young children, pregnant people, and those with long-term health conditions. ❀️

Please take extra care and check on vulnerable family, friends and neighbours.

πŸ’§ Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid too much alcohol, caffeine or sugary drinks.

🏠 Keep cool indoors
Close curtains/blinds in sunny rooms and keep windows shut while it’s hotter outside. Open them later when temperatures drop.

🧒 Avoid the hottest part of the day
Try to stay out of direct sun between 11am–3pm if possible.

πŸ‘• Dress for the weather
Wear loose, light-coloured clothing and a hat if outdoors.

🧴 Use sunscreen
Protect your skin with a high SPF sunscreen and reapply regularly.

🚨 Know the signs of heat exhaustion
Watch for:
β€’ Headache
β€’ Dizziness
β€’ Nausea
β€’ Heavy sweating
β€’ Fast breathing or pulse
β€’ Extreme tiredness

➑️ Move to a cool place, drink water, and cool the skin.

❗ Call 999 immediately if someone becomes confused, stops sweating, loses consciousness, or has signs of heatstroke.

🐢 Don’t forget pets too β€” make sure they have shade and fresh water.

Please check in on elderly relatives, neighbours, and anyone vulnerable during this hot spell. A quick phone call can make a big difference. πŸ’›

πŸ’œ It’s Cervical Screening Awareness Week πŸ’œ

If you’ve been putting off your smear test because you feel nervous, embarrassed, overwhelmed, or simply keep meaning to book it… you’re not alone.

Nearly 1 in 3 eligible people do not attend cervical screening β€” often because of anxiety or past difficult experiences. But cervical screening is one of the most effective ways to help prevent cervical cancer, by detecting HPV and early cell changes before they become serious.

At Birchwood Medical Practice, we understand that screening can feel particularly difficult for some people β€” especially if you are anxious, autistic, ADHD, neurodivergent, or have experienced trauma.

Please know:
✨ You are in control
✨ You can ask questions
✨ You can ask us to stop at any time
✨ We will do our best to support you

To help make appointments more comfortable, we can offer:
🫢 A weighted blanket for calming pressure
🫢 Hand squishies/fidgets to squeeze during the appointment
🫢 Extra time if needed
🫢 A supportive, understanding team

If you’re due, please don’t ignore your invitation.

If you’re worried, visit our cervical screening support page for helpful information, FAQs, and ways to make your appointment easier:

Refugee Week reminds us that behind every label is a human being.

Refugees are mothers, fathers, children, neighbours and patients. Many have fled unimaginable circumstances in search of safety.

In healthcare, we are reminded every day that compassion matters.

At Birchwood Medical Practice, we believe kindness, dignity and humanity should always come first.
