Endometriosis 4

Treatments for endometriosis.

Medicines are often the first treatment for endometriosis. They include:

• Painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen
• Hormones such as the combined contraceptive pill or other medicines that change the amount of hormones in your body that can help ease the pain.

You will not be given hormones if you’re trying to get pregnant.

If other treatments are not working or you have lots of endometriosis you may be offered surgery. This is also an option if endometriosis is affecting your ability to have children.

You can have surgery to remove areas of endometriosis or fluid filled sacs (ovarian cysts) caused by endometriosis, to remove your womb to ovaries or to remove part of your bladder or bowel if endometriosis is affecting these. You may need to have more surgeries if your symptoms come back after your first surgery or if surgery causes scarring that makes your organs stick together (adhesions).

The NHS national booking service is open for pre-booking flu and COVID-19 vaccinations as we head towards winter.

Residents in the South West who are eligible for flu or COVID-19 vaccinations are being encouraged to tick one thing off their to do list early this year, by scheduling their seasonal vaccination appointment.

From 1 September, flu vaccinations will be available for:

- pregnant women
- all children aged 2 or 3 years old on 31 August 2026
- all primary school and secondary school-aged children
- all children in clinical risk groups aged from 6 months to less than 18 years

From 1 October 2026, the flu offer will then be available for:
- those aged 65 and over
- those aged 18 to 65 years old in a clinical risk group
- those in long-stay residential care homes
- carers in receipt of carer’s allowance, or those who are the main carer of an elderly or disabled person
- close contacts of immunocompromised individuals
- people experiencing homelessness
- frontline healthcare workers

COVID-19 vaccinations will also be available from 1 October for:
- those aged 75 years and over
- residents in care homes for older adults
- individuals aged 6 months and over who are immunosuppressed

Respiratory infections like flu and COVID-19 spread more easily in winter because we spend more time indoors with others. However, last year in England, it is estimated that flu vaccination prevented around 104,000 hospital admissions and 7,100 deaths.

The NHS will be sending out millions of invitations for flu and COVID-19 vaccination over the coming months to remind eligible people to come forward as soon as they can. However, you do not need to wait for an invitation to book.

If you are eligible, you can book an appointment at your local pharmacy on the NHS website, NHS App or by calling 119 or you can also book directly with your GP if preferred.

Flu can be very serious for children, pregnant women, older adults, and those with long-term health conditions. Last year, it was estimated that the flu vaccine prevented 104,000 unnecessary hospitalisations.

If you’re eligible, you can now book your flu vaccination online or through the NHS App.

Endometriosis 3

Diagnosis

Endometriosis is commonly diagnosed in women and girls, from when their periods start through to menopause. It can affect anyone who has or had a womb. You should see your GP if you think you might have endometriosis, your symptoms are affecting your everyday life, work and relationships, or you have had treatment from a GP but your symptoms are not getting better or get worse.

At your GP appointment, your GP will ask about your symptoms and if any of your close relatives have had endometriosis. They will ask to do:

1. A physical examination (including an internal vaginal exam) to check your tummy and your pelvic area
2. Blood tests

If they think you may have endometriosis, your GP may refer you to a gynaecologist for further tests and offer medicines to help relieve your symptoms. It can take a long time to diagnose endometriosis because it can be similar to other conditions like adenomyosis, fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?

Symptoms happen when patches of endometriosis break down and bleed but cannot leave your body. You may have symptoms during your period such as:

• Severe period pain that stops you from doing your normal activities
• Heavy periods where you need to change your pads or tampons every 1-2 hours or you may bleed through to your clothes

You can have other symptoms at any times:

• Pain in your lower tummy and back (pelvic pain)
• Pain when you poo or p*e
• Pain during or after s*x
• Extreme tiredness
• Pain or bleeding in other areas, such as in the chest, which may cause shortness of breath and coughing up blood
• You may also have difficulty getting pregnant and have low mood or anxiety.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is where cells similar to those in the lining of your womb (uterus) grow in other parts of your body. It can have a big impact on your life but there are treatments that can help.

Endometriosis is often found in areas around the womb, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes and lining of the pelvis. It also sometimes affects organs such as the bladder and bowel. Sometimes endometriosis can be found in areas outside the pelvis, such as in the chest.
