๐Ÿ Pre-season prep is key ๐Ÿ

Recent client came in with right shoulder pain as he prepares for the start of the cricket season. Alongside his sport, he also works a desk-based job, which has contributed to a build-up of tension and poor postural stress over time.

Assessment highlighted significant tightness through the rhomboids, trapezius, and rotator cuff muscles โ€” all essential for shoulder stability, control, and performance in cricket, especially with repetitive throwing and bowling actions.

Treatment involved a combination of deep tissue massage and cupping therapy to:
โœ”๏ธ Reduce muscular tension
โœ”๏ธ Improve tissue mobility
โœ”๏ธ Increase blood flow to the affected areas
โœ”๏ธ Support overall shoulder function

๐Ÿ’ฌ Post-treatment, the client has already reported a reduction in symptoms, which is a great step towards getting him ready for the season ahead.

๐ŸŽฏ The goal now: continue to build resilience, improve movement, and keep him performing at his best when it matters most.

๐Ÿ’ญ Why I became a sports therapist

Growing up, I dealt with my fair share of injuries. While setbacks are never easy, they sparked a genuine interest in how the body works, how it recovers, and how the right support can make a real difference.

Along the way, I was fortunate to learn from and work alongside some incredible practitioners, which only strengthened my passion for helping others. All of those experiences led me to complete my degree in Sports Therapy at Hartpury University, graduating in 2021.

Today, I get to do something I genuinely love โ€” helping people prevent injuries, recover from pain, and move with confidence so they can keep doing what they enjoy.

๐Ÿ”น Understanding Lower Back Pain (LBP) ๐Ÿ”น

Lower back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions, affecting people of all ages โ€” from sedentary lifestyles to active individuals and athletes. While it can be worrying, the good news is that most lower back pain is treatable with the right approach.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Common mechanisms
Lower back pain can come from several sources, including:
โ€ข Muscle strains and overload
โ€ข Disc-related issues
โ€ข Joint dysfunction
โ€ข Neurological involvement
โ€ข Trauma or repetitive stress

Identifying the underlying cause is key, which is why a thorough assessment is always important โ€” especially to rule out any red flag conditions.

๐Ÿ‘‰ How we reduce pain
Effective management isnโ€™t about rest alone. Evidence shows the best results come from combining:
โœ”๏ธ Exercise therapy to restore strength, mobility, and confidence in movement
โœ”๏ธ Manual therapy to reduce pain, stiffness, and improve joint and tissue function
โœ”๏ธ Education & self-management so patients understand their pain and know how to manage it long-term

๐Ÿ‘‰ Takeaway message
Lower back pain is common but treatable.
The combination of exercise + manual therapy + education provides the most effective and lasting results โ€” helping people move better, feel stronger, and return to what they enjoy.

๐Ÿ“ If back pain is holding you back, getting the right advice early can make all the difference.

Cupping therapy: what the marks can tell us ๐Ÿ’†โ€โ™‚๏ธ

In todayโ€™s session, cupping was used to address lower back pain and high levels of tightness across the lower back and upper glutes in a growing teenager.

Cupping works by lifting the tissue and increasing blood flow, helping to reduce tension and improve movement.
The colour of the marks left on the skin can also provide useful information:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Darker or deeper red marks often suggest areas of greater congestion, reduced circulation, or long-standing muscular stress.

These visual cues help guide treatment, allowing us to focus on the areas that need the most attention.

๐Ÿ“š Treatment plus understanding leads to better outcomes.
