❝ Can you make me forget…? ❞
If you've had a bad experience it might seem desirable to completely forget it ever happened. But this isn't the best solution. If it feels like there is a hole in your memory your brain will worry away at that gap, trying to fill it in, often with other uncomfortable thoughts. Also, it is usually useful to keep the knowledge from that experience so you can either avoid or respond differently to a similar situation in the future.

The better solution is to remove the emotion attached to the experience. Then the memory doesn’t have the same impact on you and it's safe for you to remember. Then the memory can reduce in importance so you don't spend as much time thinking about it.

Hypnosis combined with EMDR and / or EFT is a really good way to help achieve this. People are often put off because they think that they will have to relive strong traumatic experiences over and over. But that isn't the case As the emotion comes up it is being reduced at the same time so it doesn't take hold of you.

I enjoyed a fabulous evening at NoFit State Circus in Bristol last week and would really recommend a visit if you have the chance. The performers are exuberant and skilled and the musicians are fantastic, switching between different musical styles. There is so much going on every second that you'd need to watch the show many times to pick up all the subtleties but everything fits together seamlessly.

When it comes to climbing the towers to attach ropes, walking tightropes, being on the top of a human pyramid or swinging through the air on a trapeze they obviously don't have a fear of heights and they trust their colleagues completely!

If you find heights difficult then I might not be able to help you get to be a top class circus performer but I can help you to find it easier to climb a step ladder or go to the top of a tall building and enjoy the view.

📌 Hypnotherapist's Travel Guide to Bristol: 50 Years of Aardman Exhibition

Anyone who has grown up watching TV in the UK is likely to have a special place in their heart for Aardman's creations - Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Morph. This year Aardman are celebrating their 50th anniversary and there is an exhibition at M Shed on the Harbourside. You can get a behind the scenes view of some of the models and sets. It's on from 20th June - 13th September.

I think it’s unlikely anyone would be frightened of Gromit. But if you have a fear of real dogs hypnotherapy can help to reduce that fear. It doesn't get rid of a natural caution that can be useful with some dogs but gets rid of unnecessary terror.

❝ I'm scared the hypnotist will take control ❞

Losing control is something that a lot of people are worried about. It's what I was worried about before I understood more about hypnosis.

One way of explaining it is that the type of control a hypnotist has is similar to the type of control that you give someone if they are giving you directions in a car. You follow their directions because they know the route. But if you suddenly find yourself on the edge of a cliff or appear to be going the wrong way then you're not going to keep following their instructions. You are still in control of the car and can stop or turn round.

That's why trust and communication is very important between a hypnotherapist and client. The client needs to be able to trust the hypnotist and the hypnotist needs to know if the client is feeling uncomfortable or unsure.

(This was a real signpost in Bristol for a while 😊)

❝ Is hypnotherapy safe if you have seizures? ❞

"No" is the usual response given but I think a better answer is "It depends…"

The main reasons for saying "no" are the concerns that certain experiences could cause a seizure.

⚠ Some hypnotic induction (flashing lights / spinning spiral / eye fixation)
⚠ Accessing strong emotions during the session

The main reasons for saying "it depends" are:

😊 Many hypnotherapy sessions have not resulted in seizures
😊 Hypnotherapy can be a useful way to reduce stress which in turn can reduce seizures
😊 There are lots of hypnotic inductions to choose from
😊 Hypnotherapy can help to address loads of other issues so make life easier
😊 You may be over concerned because you had 1 seizure in the past but no others

If you have been thinking about hypnotherapy but had multiple seizures or are on medication for seizures:

● Speak to your hypnotherapist to see what they think
● Take someone with you who can monitor you during the session
● Think about using another therapy like EFT, NLP or CBT.

The Bristol Birdman is a great spectacle where you can see people on homemade aerial creations launching themselves off a podium on the Harbourside and attempting to fly as far as they can - but inevitably ending up in the water. It's a fun event and whilst it's free there are people fundraising on behalf of Grassroot Communities who work with young people from underserved communities in the city. And once you've seen the birdmen you could also wander round the rest of the harbourside.

Flying as a birdman isn't the usual flying fear I help people with 😁 (but if there is anyone who has last minute nerves do get in touch!). I do regularly help people reduce their fear of flying in more conventional ways.

📌 Hypnotherapist's Travel Guide to Bristol: Enjoy the sunshine

There are lots of places to relax with a picnic and enjoy the sunshine - open spaces like The Downs, Ashton Court, Blaise Castle and numerous local parks all give you the chance to enjoy the sun or get some shade under a tree.

If you're on a short visit to Bristol, Brandon Hill is the best place to go because you get sunshine, trees, flowers, squirrels and a fabulous view across the city towards the river and Harbourside. The view is even better if you have the energy to climb Cabot Tower which is at the top of the hill.

One thing that could get in the way of this enjoyment is if you have a fear of bees, wasps or other flying insects. If that's you, book a hypnotherapy session with me so you can enjoy the summer sunshine without fear. (More info in comments)

❝ Can hypnosis help me remember? ❞
Sometimes people ask if I can help them remember something that they feel is important.
It could be something they've done, experienced, lost or misplaced.

❝ Possibly ❞
If you were drunk or distracted at the time then it is unlikely because you wouldn't have laid down a strong enough memory in the first place. Most people don't see or hear something once and then remember it for ever. Memory happens by recalling something multiple times and paying attention when you do so.

If it's something that was a stronger memory in the past then sometimes people do remember. Hypnosis can help to relax the mind so it cuts down some of the noise so you can think more clearly. You still might not remember everything really clearly but it might give you some more details. If you do try and remember something with hypnosis it's really important that the hypnotist makes sure they keep their language very neutral to avoid influencing the way you think.

📌 Hypnotherapist's Travel Guide to Bristol: Corn Exchange Air Raid Shelter

Whilst the air raid shelter under the Corn Exchange has been there for 86 years it has only recently been opened up to the public. You can now go down to the shelter for 75 minute tour and learn about the history of Bristol during the Blitz. The guides are really knowledgeable and entertaining.

Of course the Air Raid Shelter + St. Nicholas Market Walking Tour might not be suitable if you are claustrophobic. But if you would rather not miss out on this experience because of your fear of enclosed spaces, you could come to see me first and use hypnotherapy to reduce you fear. Think about all the other things you would then be able to enjoy too.
