Q&A from our last workshop

Although low nutrient status isn’t the direct cause of PMDD, ensuring optimum levels can go a long way towards improving your symptoms.

I always advise checking baseline levels as a first step. Then supplementing for support, especially in the last 2 weeks of your cycle when hormone levels begin to fall.

Make sure your GP has done these basic blood tests and INSIST if not.

Always check with your GP or pharmacist before supplementing.

If you’ve been feeling like you’re on a ride you didn’t choose — track your symptoms, advocate for yourself, and find a provider who actually listens.

Save this if your hormones have you screaming too 💛

You’re not alone. You’re just in your rollercoaster era.

This was one of the questions raised during Q&A at my most recent workshop so thought I would share as it’s such a great question!

Oestrogen levels do indeed decline during perimenopause but less commonly known is that progesterone levels fall first and oestrogen levels can still spike or fall at some points of our cycle.

I like to think of progesterone as the calming hormone (think sleep, improved moods and period regulation) and oestrogen as the building hormone (think bone, muscle, appetite suppressant, brain & heart protection)

So if progesterone falls and oestrogen is all over the place then it turns into a bit of a rollercoaster - anyone else know that feeling? 🙋🏻‍♀️

Supporting the liver is one of the very first things I advise my patients whether it’s PMS, PCOS, low moods or menopause. Because there’s no point throwing supplements in on top of an already overloaded liver - it doesn’t need more to do!

Sometimes less is more and it’s not necessarily about a ‘detox diet’

It’s more about what you’re not eating

If you’re on a weight management programme please make sure the provider is providing accredited nutritional support alongside. If not, I highly recommend you get some! I am seeing some concerning inappropriate advice or lack of advice in many cases.

Thinking back I realise now the warning signs and symptoms had been going on for years before this happened and I tried to listen but life is busy and you carry on.

Perimenopause, caring for a toddler, working, running a household, exhaustion, no nearby family support. As every working parent knows you just want to do the best for your family and your own health takes a back seat. I really had to take a step back and go back through the same health plan I did 10 years ago to heal again.

Some of us have a higher tolerance and resilience for stress and nervous system regulation. Some of us don’t for reasons we can’t control. We are all so different and it’s about figuring out our individual needs so we can be the best we can, not pushing ourselves to limits we can’t sustain.

The challenges we all face in our life stages are constantly changing and simply knowing what we should eat/do isn’t always enough. This is why having a nutritional health plan to fall back on is invaluable. You will come back to it time and time again.
