Everything you need to know about silver cups for breastfeeding …. Or is it?

A popular parenting magazine recently ran this advertorial singing the praises about silver cups for breastfeeding.

There are so many things wrong, or just unhelpful about this piece of writing.

Yes, breastfeeding can often be tricky at the start. Yes, sore ni***es are common, though not compulsory.

It’s always worth checking in with your midwife, health visitor, peer supporters, breastfeeding counsellors or IBCLC to try to work out why breastfeeding is sore. It’s probably a positioning or latchy thing. It’s not because your ni***es need to toughen up. It’s vanishingly unlikely to be thrush.

It’s certainly not helpful to have sore ni***es marinating in sweaty milky cups 24/7. Silver or otherwise.

Silver cups have no evidence to support healing or pain relief.
Silver cups are expensive. Probably about as much as an uber to the breastfeeding group.
It takes longer for soggy ni***es to heal.
Silver cups don’t get to the root of the problem.
Silver cups may be useful for short periods of time with long periods of time between uses when you need a bit of ‘nipple armour’.

Remember, the ‘article’ is an advert.

Have you heard of micro- movements?

Hello I’m Ann, I’m an IBCLC in Bristol.

You know that bit at the start of breastfeeding when everyone’s shouting, “Open wider! Bigger mouth! Chin on! Nose off! Left a bit!

Breastfeeding isn’t usually one giant dramatic latch.

It’s a series of tiny micro movements. A little head tilt. A small shoulder shuffle.
Bringing your baby in closer.
You softening your hands and letting them organise themselves.

Babies are surprisingly good at fine tuning if we give them the chance.

So if a latch feels almost right, don’t assume you need to take them off and start from scratch. Watch for those tiny adjustments.
Move them towards their toes a bit. Let them tip their head back a bit.

They can be the difference between “ouch” and “actually… that’s comfortable.”

Big changes are sometimes built from the smallest movements.

I rang my mum to tell her I was breastfeeding standing up on the bus stop in Kings Chase Shopping Centre.
I’m so proud of myself!

Sometimes you’ve just gotta do what you’ve gotta do and then ring your mum.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you.
