With the solstice coming at the weekend, I thought we'd celebrate that with a practice based around sun salutations.

These engage all the major muscle groups encouraging both strength and flexibility. At the same time, working with the breath to move between postures helps to calm the mind and reduce stress.

Below we see Elijah saluting the sun as he stands proud in his little castle 😉

In this week's practice, I thought we'd focus on working into our hips and pelvis, opening up the joints and then actively releasing into the poses to help relieve tightness and improve our joint mobility.

Opening up our hips can improve our posture and help alleviate lower back pain, as well as releasing emotional stress.

Below we see Elijah letting it all go as he releases into his hips squatting to play with the seaweed 😉

Having focused on the upper body last week, I thought this week we'd move to the lower body. Our legs spend so much time supporting us that the muscles can become tight and a little inflexible. We'll work with poses that both stretch and strengthen the muscles in our legs and feet, helping to improve balance and stability.

Below we see Solomon and Elijah using the strength in their legs to support them as they play in the rockpools 😉

In this week's practice I thought we'd turn our attention to the upper body, working into the neck, shoulder and arms to open up our posture and help to release tension. Practising poses that work into these areas also helps to improve our breathing capacity allowing for deeper, fuller breaths that calm the nervous system.

Below we see Elijah using his upper body strength to reach up and look to the crest of the hill 😉

With the temperature due to rise, I thought in this week's practice we'd bring our focus to forward folds which have a cooling and calming effect helping to reduce anxiety.

On a physical level, they open up the backbody counteracting spinal compression and helping create length. They also help to stretch the hamstrings which can help to alleviate back pain. And as we release the head and neck it can help us unwind.

On an energetic level, forward folds are inward-looking helping us to focus on what's happening within us rather than the outside world.

Below we see Elijah releasing into a forward fold as he finished his journey down the slide

I was listening to a podcast this week all about the immune system which said that, rather than trying to boost it eg with supplements, we should be aiming to keep it in balance - something the body is generally good at given the opportunity (although obviously some health conditions mean this is not the case).

Stress is one of the most common things that can kick it out of balance, so it is good to find ways to allow the body to let go of stress and that is the focus for this week. Using the breath and body awareness to be in the moment, and create some space for ourselves.

Below we see Solomon enjoying being in the moment with the cat in the garden 😉

In this week's practice, I thought we'd have a focus on virabhadrasana - the warrior poses which are said to embody the courage, focus and inner strength of a spiritual warrior and enable us to face life's challenges.

Requiring balance, stability and alignment, the poses help us to develop strong legs. open hips, core strength and shoulder mobility. Focusing on all these different elements also helps us to be mindful and to stay in the moment.

Below we see Solomon and Elijah striding forward like courageous warriors 😉

This week marks the festival of Beltane - the Celtic festival that marks the midway point between the Spring equinox and the Summmer solstice. It celebrates growth, creation, fertility and new life, and is a time of blossoming and increasing energy.

We'll be working with poses that open up the hips and the heart, helping to ignite both swadisthana chakra and anahata chakra.

Below we see Solomon taking a moment to rest among the new growth and absorb its energy 😉

In this week's practice, I thought we'd explore the difference between movement and stillness - working with slow flows and then long holds, and the different ways we use the breath to facilitate that.

Below we see Solomon and Elijah finding a moment of stillness in their deckchairs 😉

In this week's practice, I thought we'd focus on the core muscles - not just our abdominals but our pelvic ploor, diaphragm, gluteals and erector spinae. These muscles work together to help us have good posture and to be able to move easily. Using our core effectively helps protect against injuries in our day to day life.

Below we see Solomon engaging his core muscles as he reaches up to stroke Mouse on the Gruffalo trail
