I thought I'd share a bit about why strength/resistance training is sooo good. Remember resistance can be own body weight or other equipment like bands/rings/reformer, not just dumbells or kettlebells.
Building muscles isn't just about strengthening your body and preventing falls as you age. Resistance training stimulates bones to produce more cells and thus increases strength which will help stave off osteoporosis, for example.
Muscles store sugar. If your store isn't big enough (not enough lean muscle mass) more blood will be present in the blood, this increases insulin as a response to it trying to store the excess. And this can lead to type 2 diabetes, and contribute to obesity. Excess weight has adverse effects on organs and joints and can contribute to many health conditions, some of which can become chronic.
Muscles will retain activity and will remain metabolically active for building and repairing. This leads to better heart health, joint support, bone and general health, and reduced chance of chronic ill health.
So, find some resistance exercise you enjoy, be it Pilates, yoga, weights class, aquafit, and do it or a combo of it, several times a week. I regularly introduce extra resistance into my classes with equipment to support my clients' exercise journey.
