Let’s be real for a second… white noise is unlikely to take your little one from waking every 2 hours overnight, to sleeping through the night. I talk about how you can do that below.
However, when used in the right way, white noise does have its benefits, so firstly, lets check you’re using it correctly:
1️⃣ Does your white noise stay on all night?
It’s key to avoid white noise that turns off after 20 minutes (or other short time) after your little one has fallen asleep. If they use white noise to fall asleep at bedtime, they’ll need it to get themselves back to sleep if they wake in the night.
2️⃣ Is your white noise positioned correctly?
If using it to block out external sounds, place the white noise between baby and the source of the sound to create a barrier.
Night wakings can be caused by external sounds you may not have considered such as heating coming on, traffic building up outside, dogs barking, or birds tweeting in the early hours!
3️⃣ Is it the right volume?
The recommended limit is 60 decibels (free apps can help you test this), but I’d recommend staying much lower. You can usually achieve that by moving the white noise machine as far away from the cot as possible.
4️⃣ Does your white noise have a constant tone?
Melodies or music create a lovely environment for your bedtime routine, but once your little one goes into their cot for sleep, these should be turned off. They have an up and down tone which can be disruptive to sleep. Use one with a constant tone instead.
😴 If you’ve checked all of the above and your little one is still waking regularly… the white noise is unlikely to be addressing the real reason your little one is waking through the night.
⭐ I help exhausted families understand the exact reasons their little one is waking every 2 hours through the night, and teach them exactly how to change that in a gradual and responsive way, meaning they can stop guessing how to make change, and stop buying gimmicks that don’t address the root cause!⭐
