Ever wonder what your therapist thinks about after you leave?
It’s a myth that we don’t think about clients at all, or that we are over analysing everything you said. The truth is somewhere in the middle.
Honestly, sometimes we are reflecting about the session. Did what I said land? Are they telling me what’s true, or what feels safe to say? What’s sitting in the silence I haven’t asked about yet? And always - I hope they have been able to be kinder to themselves this week.
But we’re (trying!) not to carry clients home with us - compartmentalising is what lets us show up fully in sessions, and still have something left for our own lives.
I know some people think we just do this job for the money. And there’s no shame in being paid. But trust me, there are about 1,000 other jobs I could do for more money and considerably less emotional stress 😅
Fellow therapists, you’re allowed to care and to switch off. Both at once. And, to build a practice that allows you to be fully present in all areas of your life, and not to burn out.
