This is a classic example of focusing on what’s in my control and letting go of what isn’t.
Four years ago, I was diagnosed with skin cancer. Before that, sunshine was one of my greatest joys. I loved the feeling of the sun on my skin, the freckles that appeared after a little time outdoors, the glow of a sun-kissed tan and the way it made me feel.
Now, things are different.
I have to cover up from top to toe. No bare shoulders, no exposed arms, no backless tops. On beautiful sunny days like we've had recently, I can’t simply lie in the sun and soak it all in. Ten minutes, and then it's straight into the shade.
I could choose to be frustrated about that. I could focus on everything I can no longer do.
Or I can choose to enjoy the sunshine safely.
Guess which one I lean into?
The truth is, we always have a choice. It may not be the choice we originally wanted, and it may not look the way we imagined, but there is still a choice.
I've learned that it's often not the activity itself that brings us joy, it's the emotion we experience while we're doing it.
So if one path is no longer available, find another way to create that feeling.
I may not be sunbathing for hours anymore, but I can still enjoy warm walks, outdoor coffees, sitting in the garden under an umbrella and appreciating the beauty of a sunny day.
Find the joy. It might just look a little different than before. If this feels hard then let's talk, as there might be some energy blocked in your system preventing the emotions from appearing.
And while you're at it, wear your sunscreen, check your moles regularly, and stay safe. ☀️
