What have the team been up to this week?

1️⃣-4️⃣ Team attended our Mandatory Training refresher course 👏

5️⃣ Enjoying the warmer days.

6️⃣ Pancakes aren’t just for pancake day - working on ideation, put some mix in the pan and let it set, then come up with ideas for what it looks like. Ideas here included a moose, an alien and Shrek. This also worked on fine motor and visual motor skills.

7️⃣,8️⃣ Enjoying a Home spa is a lovely way of exploring safe touch, different textures and tool use.

Info from Dogs Trust 👇

Dogs have incredibly sensitive noses with up to 300 million scent receptors. When you compare this to a human’s 6 million, we start to see why dogs enjoy sniffing so much. That’s why these slower walks, where a dog can “stop and smell the flowers” can be more pleasurable for your dog as they can glean so much information from a smell and it’s incredibly enriching for them.

Sniffing can also be very calming for dogs. A meandering, sniff session on a long-leash can release the mood-boosting chemical in their brain called dopamine. It’s a lot like a yoga or meditation session for your pup.🐾

A mix of work, social and everything in between. It’s lovely to see occupational balance playing out in the everyday things we do across the team.

1️⃣ Management meeting 👩‍💼
2️⃣ Taking a moment to enjoy the sunshine ☀️
3️⃣ Cinema trip - thinking about how important tactile discrimination is in everyday life. Such as when you’re trying to feel out the M&Ms in your popcorn when watching a film at the cinema.📽️
4️⃣ Setting up upper limb programmes with GripAble’s help. 💪
5️⃣ Andrea watching Dracula at the theatre 🎭

Creative OT reflected 🥞✨

Yesterday’s Pancake Day was a perfect example of how creativity transforms everyday activities into meaningful therapy.

Behind the mixing bowls and golden pancakes were so many OT skills in action:

🖐️ Fine motor skills – pouring, flipping, decorating
🧠 Executive functioning – planning, sequencing, timing
👐 Bilateral coordination – stabilising and stirring

Creative OT isn’t about making activities complicated — it’s about seeing the therapeutic potential in simple, purposeful moments ☺️

5 different ways to use a gym ball!

Choose whichever order you think feels best 👇

1. Gym ball between 2 people – Combine gentle rocking as well as resistance from the gym ball.
2. Sitting against the gym ball – Person get too heightened when bouncing on a ball? Resistance and proprioception without vestibular input.
3. Sitting at table on gym ball – Swap chair for a gym ball to increase postural challenge with usual table top activities.
4. Vibrating cushion – Add vibration for more intense experience.
5. Small ball at table – No gym ball? No problem! Any small ball can offer deep pressure.

Trying The Feeding Trust Day 2 Christmas challenge yesterday, to cut food up into tiny pieces and eat them one at a time to raise awareness of the challenges faced by children with feeding difficulties. The main thing that struck us was how much longer mealtimes take and how there seemed to be so many pieces when food is cut so small. We only managed a few pieces before starting to feel frustrated and we only did it for one meal!

The Feeding Trust are a charity and are raising funds to continue their vital work.
