Teens Unite Fighting Cancer Improving the lives of teenagers & young adults living with, & beyond cancer. This inevitably has a massive impact on their friendships and self confidence.

Teens Unite Fighting Cancer was co-founded by Karen Millen OBE and supports teenagers (aged 13-24) with cancer.. The charity aims to help young people build on their self esteem and self confidence and reduce feelings of isolation by taking them on fun days out. Activities range from concerts and football matches to motivational art and beauty workshops. The charity is based in Hertfordshire but s

upports teens from all across the South East. What makes Teens Unite unique as a charity helping this age range is that we support teenagers through treatment, remission and beyond, for as long as they need. The teenage years can be challenging enough without being devastated by a life-limiting diagnosis. We find that our teens need support post treatment more than ever as they have missed large amounts of school, work or university due to treatment. Our main aim is to get our teens together as often as possible in a fun-filled environment; giving them the chance to share their experiences and gain strength from realising that they are not alone in their battle. We recently asked our teens to fill in a questionnaire about the charity. One teen said that "Teens Unite is my lifeline".

“Hi, I’m a 20 year old trans man and I was 18 when I was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Before cancer, I had just come out and was very overwhelmed trying to live my life as my authentic self for the first time.
I was exhausted and had an unexplained elevated count of white blood cells. I knew something was wrong, but no doctor could give me an answer. Then the lump appeared and suddenly I was taken seriously. It took weeks of tests and scans before I was told I had cancer.

My diagnosis came exactly 20 days before my scheduled top surgery that I wanted for the best part of a decade, and I was absolutely devastated when it had to be postponed. That was the hardest part of receiving the diagnosis for me.

My friends supported me and tried to understand but it wasn’t their fault that they didn’t get how I felt. I’m from a small town where there are basically zero trans people that are out and I always felt isolated and alone and now I was faced with another life changing thing that would make me even more isolated.

I explored my identity for years and after coming out I had to rediscover everything about myself. It was incredibly scary and overwhelming.

My identity as a trans man definitely impacted my cancer treatment. I had to educate the medical staff that operated the scanning machines because they did not understand the Mx on my record meant I was trans.

To me, pride is about accepting who you are. And having the ability to feel safe enough to be you.

Being able to attend Teens Unite events has changed my life. I have met people that I never thought I would meet who understand parts of my life. I came out to the staff at Teens Unite and they were so supportive and made it a lot easier. It really made such a difference to me as someone who spent years of my life being bullied to finally meet a group of people who actually liked me for me and didn’t even know I was trans when I met them. Then I told people and they didn’t care because Teens Unite created a safe atmosphere and it’s hard to put into words how much of a difference that made to make me feel safe.”

“Before I was diagnosed, I was just coming to terms that my nan had died 2 years before. It was hard. I had just started high school and just started to fit in which was hard. Then I got really ill and eventually found out I had cancer. I was scared. Scared of the unknown not knowing what would happen.

Cancer has changed my life in many ways. It’s changed my life mentally because it’s always in the back of my head that it could come back. It can be a very scary place when that’s all you can think about. Socially it changed loads of my friendships and school life. It made school horrible for me because I had to ‘catch up’ but I couldn’t because I didn’t understand any of it, not only that, I also got bullied due to this so that made it even harder. Coping at the start was hard but it’s gotten easier, but I think it will always be something that’s gonna affect me as my life will never be ‘normal again’.

Being part of Teens Unite has helped me in so many ways because it’s made me realise, I’m not the only person who feels like this and there’s so many people my age who feels the same. It’s made me not always think about the worse. They are always there to listen and don’t judge and sometimes that’s all that you need. Being at events with people who understand what I’m going through helps a lot because they aren’t going to judge you or tell you to shut up about it you’re ‘fine now’ when reality is you will never be fine again.

If you’re going through cancer or treatment, I promise you aren’t alone and there’s a lot of people like you. Don’t hesitate to tell people how you feel.”

Three months ago, we shared some incredible news - planning permission had been approved for The Home of Teens Unite, the first retreat in England dedicated to supporting young people overcoming cancer.

Since then, the hard hats may not be on just yet, but the work is well underway.

With the support of our incredible corporate partners, Volkerwessels, who have been coordinating and managing the project, we’ve been progressing a range of vital pre-construction activities to move our vision forward.

From ground investigations and ecological surveys to design development and utility planning, a growing network of businesses and specialists have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to prepare for construction.

Every survey completed, every design reviewed and every milestone reached brings us one step closer to creating a place where young people can rebuild confidence, reconnect with others and look forward to the future.

Planning permission is secured. The project team is in place. Preparations for construction are progressing. Now, we need the final funding to begin the build.
