An unexpected diagnosis can make the world feel like it has suddenly shifted beneath your feet. For those recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), the initial days, weeks, and months are often filled with a whirlwind of emotions: confusion, fear, uncertainty, and an endless stream of questions about what the future holds.
But if there is one message to take to heart, it is this: An MS diagnosis is a new chapter, not the end of your story. And you do not have to navigate it alone.
Every year on May 30, the global community comes together to mark World MS Day. Spearheaded by the MS International Federation and its global partners, this day is all about raising awareness, sharing life-changing stories, and building solidarity.

For many individuals living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other neurological conditions, hot weather and increased body temperature can significantly worsen symptoms. This phenomenon, often referred to as Uhthoff's phenomenon or heat sensitivity, is a common challenge, affecting between 60% and 80% of people with MS. While the effects are temporary and do not cause permanent damage, they can be highly disruptive to daily life. Understanding why heat impacts MS and implementing effective coping strategies are crucial for maintaining comfort and quality of life.

This year, Mental Health Awareness Week takes place between 11 and 17 May.
While this is a time for everyone to reflect on their well-being, the conversation often takes on a much deeper meaning for those living with neurological conditions.
The theme for this year is "Take Action"—a call to move beyond awareness and into proactive support. For the millions of people in the UK living with conditions like Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Motor Neurone Disease, or the after-effects of a stroke, taking action for mental health isn't just an option; it is a vital part of daily survival.

Every year in May, the UK comes together to mark Stroke Awareness Month. It is a time to shine a light on a condition that changes a life every five minutes in the UK. Whether you are a survivor, a carer, or someone looking to understand the risks, this month is about two things: Awareness and Action.
For 2026, the Stroke Association is continuing its vital "Make May Purple" campaign. The goal is simple but profound: to ensure that every stroke survivor has the support they need to find their "new normal."

This MS Awareness Week, we want to highlight the harm that incorrect assumptions can cause and the real-life consequences they can have.
MS affects everyone differently. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and many are not immediately visible.
We are encouraging people to listen, learn, and understand MS before saying something that could hurt or offend.
Think you know MS? Think again.
We want to hear from you. Let us know in the comments something that you wish people understood more about your MS.

Have you ever felt judged for using accessible facilities?
A concerning 51% of people living with MS have avoided using accessible facilities—such as toilets, Blue Badge parking spaces or priority seats on public transport—because they fear being questioned, challenged or judged. These services exist to support people with MS, yet incorrect assumptions are preventing many from using them.
Living with MS is challenging, and this MS Awareness Week, we want to highlight the harm that these assumptions can cause.
We are encouraging people to listen, learn and understand MS before saying something that could hurt or offend.
