F*ck 12 step programmes, there’s no way my “ADHD” Brain can cope with that …
More like , my ADHD brain knows that’s overkill.
Just something else that sets me up for failure, we all know there’s no way we’re have the attention span for that!
And , I know this is controversial, but less is more .
Especially when you are knee deep in chronic stress.
The last thing you need is the pressure of finding time everyday to follow a routine you don’t want to do, when you’re already bursting at the seams with your mental load !
So here I am, sat watching a program with the kids. Regulating my nervous system. Quietly. No dramatics (I save those for when I’m cooking)
Looks like I’m doing nothing, doesn’t it?
So many of us feel completely overwhelmed at times, and the panic of other people potentially noticing us ‘regulating’ adds to that overwhelm.
If you look at my hand, I’m applying pressure at the base of my skull on either side of my neck.
This activates your vagus nerve (a main player in stress!)
For some people just applying pressure is enough, if you’re a bit sadistic like me and that whole pleasure pain thing when it comes to healing really does it for you, then massage the area too. With as much pressure as feels good.
Then I’m taking intentional deep breaths, that fill my stomach, as well as expanding my rib cage and then a slow exhale through the mouth, making the exhale longer than inhale.
Five of these and I’m back in the room.
Give it a try and let me know what you noticed.
Shoulders relaxing?
Jaw unclenching?
Hit follow for regulation tools that you can actually use in the moment without looking or feeling like a nutter (mostly!)
