Pendleside Hospice

Pendleside Hospice Our first service, a telephone helpline, was provided from a small office in the old Marsden Hospital.

Pendleside Hospice exists to promote and enhance the quality of life for people with advancing long term and life limiting illnesses, as well as provide support for their families and carers 💛 Local people commenced fundraising in October 1988 to provide hospice care for Burnley and Pendle people diagnosed with cancer and other life limiting-illnesses. A day care service soon followed and we were

allocated space at Pendle Community Hospital, whilst fundraising continued to build the Hospice, which opened in 1997. Since then, many thousands of local people have benefitted from our specialist palliative and end-of-life services. We now offer day therapy, specialist physiotherapy, complementary therapies, inpatient care, 24/7 hospice at home, counselling, bereavement support and spiritual care. Pendleside was built “by the people and for the people of Burnley and Pendle”; a statement that remains true today. Our vital services are only possible because of the outstanding charitable support of local people, who have given generously to Pendleside over many years. Without that support, the Hospice wouldn't be able to provide care that is relied upon by so many local families at very difficult times in their lives.

To celebrate Volunteers' Week, we wanted to share this lovely story about one of our incredible volunteers and the lasting impact that giving your time can have. 💛

Peter's volunteering journey began after his wife received care in our Inpatients Unit. Wanting to give something back after she passed away, he joined the Hospice as a volunteer driver. Little did he know that a chance conversation about his love of singing and playing the guitar would lead to something truly special.

After being introduced to our Health, Wellbeing and Rehabilitation team, Peter began performing in one of our patient and carer groups. There, he met Val, who joined in with his music, and together they formed the foundations of what would become "Free for All'", a five-piece band that now regularly performs at the Hospice. 🪕🎼

What started with one volunteer sharing his talent has grown into a group of friends bringing joy and music to so many people. Their story is a wonderful example of how volunteering can create a lasting impact, not only for those receiving support, but for the volunteers themselves.

📖 Read Peter's full story below and discover how one volunteer's act of kindness grew into something much bigger - https://www.pendleside.org.uk/more-than-just-a-band

We have a variety of volunteer roles available across the Hospice, including patient transport drivers, Meals on Wheels drivers, gardeners, administrators, retail volunteers and more. To find out more, please email natalie.o'[email protected] 📧

Today marks the beginning of Volunteers’ Week, and we started it in the loveliest way, with a lunchtime sunflower planting session. 🌻

We invited all our volunteers into the Hospice to have some lunch together as we planted our own sunflower seeds.

To every volunteer who gives their time, their kindness and their heart to Pendleside, thank you! Your support touches every part of what we do, and we are forever grateful for the difference you make every single day. 💛

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing stories, videos and statistics that showcase the incredible impact our volunteers make across the Hospice.

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming back past and present participants from our Art Groups and Shabby Shed Group, for the unveiling of our Health, Wellbeing and Rehabilitation Art Gallery at Pendleside Hospice. 🎨

Held on a beautiful sunny afternoon, the event brought together participants, their families, Hospice staff, volunteers, Trustees and the Deputy Mayor of Burnley to celebrate the creativity and achievements of those who have taken part in our wellbeing services over the years. ☀️

The exhibition showcased a fantastic collection of artwork and projects created by participants, highlighting their talent, creativity and personal journeys.

Guests were also treated to live piano music from our wonderful volunteer, Jean, who played a selection of much-loved classics throughout the afternoon, creating the perfect atmosphere. Our Catering Team also prepared a delicious selection of canapés for everyone to enjoy while browsing the exhibition. 🎹🧀

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed their artwork and joined us for this special occasion. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with lots creativity and a reminder of the positive impact our Health, Wellbeing and Rehabilitation services have on so many people in our community. 💛
