ANATOMY OF VIBRATION – HOW TUNING FORK THERAPY WORKS
Since I began studying and working with sound, I’ve increasingly encountered dismissive comments from people who mock the effectiveness of tuning‑fork sound therapy.
I fully understand the scepticism — we live in a time where people expect evidence and clear explanations.
This is why I decided to calmly and clearly show how tuning forks work from the perspective of biology, physics and neuroscience, what real impact they have on our health and wellbeing — and that there is solid scientific research behind all of this.
NEUROACOUSTIC AND VIBROACOUSTIC – THE TWO PILLARS OF TUNING FORK THERAPY
Tuning forks influence the human body on two levels:
- neuroacoustic – through hearing and the brain’s processing of sound,
- vibroacoustic – through physical vibration transmitted into the tissues.
A pure, stable sinusoidal wave generated by a tuning fork is interpreted by the autonomic nervous system as a predictable and safe stimulus.
This is the first step in calming the stress response.
The nervous system does not respond to a single tone, but to the difference between two tones — THE INTERVAL.
Well‑chosen intervals calm the limbic response (fear, tension, stress),
stimulate vagus nerve activity, improve hemispheric synchronisation,
and influence HRV (Heart Rate Variability) as well as brainwave activity (EEG).
This is measurable, physiological action — not metaphysics.
MECHANOTRANSDUCTION– vibration transformed into biochemistry
When a vibrating tuning fork is applied to the body, mechanotransduction occurs: cells within the tissues and fascia convert mechanical vibration into biochemical signals.
Effects include: muscle relaxation, improved microcirculation, reduced fascial tension, accelerated regeneration.
THE EFFECTS OF SPECIFIC VIBRATIONS
128 Hz / 64 Hz / 32 Hz
Low frequencies with strong bone conduction.
Research shows their influence on: deep fascial release, reduction of muscular tension, activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and repair).
40 Hz is a gamma rhythm that’s being intensively studied in modern neuroscience.
Research from MIT shows that 40 Hz stimulation (light, sound, vibration) improves sensory integration, focus, working memory, and neuronal coherence.
This frequency also influences the brain at a cellular level: it activates microglia, supports the brain’s natural detoxification processes, and improves the flow of cerebrospinal fluid.
In scientific studies, 40 Hz is being explored for its potential benefits in:
- Alzheimer’s disease (microglial activation, reduction of amyloid),
- memory and cognitive impairments,
- ADHD (supporting sensory integration and concentration),
- anxiety and nervous system overload,
- sleep disturbances and poor neurological recovery,
- mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
This frequency supports clarity, focus, and nervous system balance, and its effects are becoming increasingly well‑documented in neuroscience.
136.1 Hz (OM)
A tone traditionally used to deepen the breath, calm the heart rhythm and support vagal tone. It brings the body into a state of quiet and stability.
Tuning forks do not replace conventional medicine.
Their role is different — and absolutely fundamental:

When the nervous system returns to balance, the body can finally:
release accumulated tension, improve circulation and breathing,
stabilise digestion, enhance sleep quality, strengthen immunity,
balance hormone production, and increase the natural release of nitric oxide (research on low‑frequency mechanical vibration shows that NO dilates blood vessels, improves circulation, and has anti‑inflammatory effects).
These changes create the conditions in which the body can return to balance and its natural ability to self‑regenerate.
This is not magic — it is physiology.
THE HOLISTIC PERESPECTIVE – working with the energetic field
Beyond physical vibration and nervous system regulation, tuning forks also work within the subtle field around the body — a concept described by many sound‑healing researchers.
Eileen McKusick explains that the human biofield stores tension, emotional patterns and unresolved stress.
Sound interacts with this field, helping it reorganise, clear “static” and restore coherence.
When the field becomes more ordered, the nervous system naturally follows.
Fabien Maman describes sound as a bridge between the physical body and the subtle energetic layers.
He observed that vibration influences the aura, chakras and emotional body, helping a person feel lighter, clearer and more connected to their inner guidance.
John Beaulieu emphasises that tuning forks create coherence — both in the nervous system and in the space around the body.
He teaches that sound supports presence, awareness and alignment, allowing the mind and body to settle into harmony.
Together, their work suggests that tuning forks influence not only the tissues and the nervous system, but also the energetic field, helping a person feel more grounded, centred and internally aligned.
Sound creates space, clarity and coherence — and when the field becomes coherent, the nervous system follows.
