Scientists have discovered that menstrual blood can actively stimulate damaged joint cartilage to repair itself, potentially paving the way for a revolutionary, non-invasive treatment for osteoarthritis.
In a fascinating biological twist, researchers have uncovered a promising new frontier in regenerative medicine using a widely available and often discarded resource: menstrual blood. According to a groundbreaking study published in Scientific Reports, mesenchymal stromal cells found in menstrual blood secrete tiny, messenger-like particles called extracellular vesicles (EVs). These EVs contain a potent mix of proteins, lipids, and genetic material that, when applied to damaged joint tissue, actively stimulate chondrocytes, the cells responsible for cartilage health, to rebuild the joint's protective extracellular matrix and slow down tissue degradation.
