I'm really pleased and truly honoured to have completed my Lymphoedema Training with Jane Wigg and her incredible team at the Lymphoedema Training Academy.🙌🏻

It was a privilege to learn from such experienced professionals and deepen my knowledge in the assessment and management of lymphoedema.

Supporting patients with lymphatic conditions, including those recovering from cancer treatment, requires specialised knowledge and a compassionate approach. I am committed to continuing to develop these skills.

If there is one thing I’ve learnt throughout my career as physiotherapist is that no two bodies are the same. Every person I see brings their own history, their own healing journey and their own pace. Each body responds differently, and that’s exactly why personalised care matters🌟.

✨ They may look similar, but they are completely different conditions.

🔹 Lipoedema is a chronic disorder of fat distribution, mainly affecting women. It causes symmetrical enlargement of the hips, legs (and sometimes arms), pain, and easy bruising, generally affecting both legs while the feet remain unaffected.

🔹 Lymphoedema, on the other hand, is caused by a dysfunction in the lymphatic system, leading to fluid accumulation, swelling, and heaviness, usually starting in one limb and including the feet.

Understanding the difference is essential for proper diagnosis and management.

👩🏻‍⚕️ I provide specialised physiotherapy to support patients living with both conditions, helping to relieve discomfort, reduce swelling, and improve mobility and rehabilitation.

✨ Why is lymphatic drainage so gentle and slow?

The answer lies in how the lymphatic system works.
Unlike blood circulation, which is fast and powered by the heart (~5 litres per hour), the lymphatic system moves only around 120 ml per hour and has no central pump.

Lymphatic vessels lie just beneath the skin, which means the right technique must be light, slow and precise.

⚠️ Deep or strong massage does not stimulate lymph flow, it acts on muscles, not lymph.

In many breast cancer surgeries, lymph nodes in the armpit (axillary nodes) are removed to prevent the spread of disease. While this step is vital, it can also reduce the body’s ability to drain lymph fluid on that side, sometimes leading to swelling (lymphoedema) in the arm or chest.
