🎓 Medical Students at Knowsley Medical Centre 🩺

From the beginning of September, Knowsley Medical Centre will be welcoming medical students to the practice as part of our role as a training practice. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

The medical students will be with us until the end of January and will have the opportunity to observe consultations and learn alongside our clinical team. 📚🩺

We are proud to support the education and training of future healthcare professionals and really appreciate our patients’ support in providing these valuable learning opportunities. ❤️

Patients will always be informed and asked for their consent before a medical student is involved in their consultation. If you would prefer not to have a medical student present, please let a member of our team know. Your decision will not affect the care you receive. 😊

👶💉 Childhood Vaccines: Myth vs Fact 💉👶

There are lots of myths about childhood vaccines. Here are the facts to help you make informed decisions.

❌ MYTH: My child doesn't need vaccines because these diseases are rare.
✅ FACT: Diseases like measles and whooping cough still exist and can spread quickly. Vaccination is the best way to protect your child and others.

❌ MYTH: Babies are too young to receive vaccines.
✅ FACT: The childhood vaccination schedule is carefully designed to protect babies when they are most vulnerable to serious illnesses.

❌ MYTH: Too many vaccines will overwhelm my child's immune system.
✅ FACT: Children's immune systems cope with thousands of germs every day. The number of antigens in vaccines is tiny compared with what they naturally encounter.

❌ MYTH: Childhood vaccines cause autism.
✅ FACT: Extensive research has shown no link between vaccines and autism.

❌ MYTH: It's better for children to catch diseases naturally.
✅ FACT: Diseases such as measles, meningitis and whooping cough can lead to serious complications. Vaccines help protect children without the risks of the diseases themselves.

Please submit your request through Accurx Triage during the specified hours for prompt care.
You will be triaged by a clinician if appropriate the same day.
You may be redirected to alternative services best suited to provide your care.
A submission does not guarantee an appointment.
A phone call does not get treated any faster than these so you will be advised to complete one unless deemed necessary for a staff member to complete on your behalf.

Important Information:

Purpose: The Accurx service is designed for assessing acute but non-emergency conditions. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please visit the hospital or call 999.
Acute Conditions Suitable for on-the-day appointments on ACCRUX:
Sudden onset of mild to moderate pain (e.g., back pain, headaches)
Suspected minor infections (e.g., throat, ear, or skin infections)
Coughs and colds that are worsening
Mild breathing discomfort, such as a new or persistent cough
Unexplained mild fever
Minor injuries that do not require immediate hospital care (e.g., sprains, minor cuts)
Worsening of mild symptoms in pre-existing conditions (e.g., asthma flare-ups, mild allergies)

It's looking like it'll be another warm one, so make sure you stay safe in the sun!

Here's our top tips to keep cool during the hot weather:
💧 Drink plenty of water
🌳 Stay in the shade where possible - if you're out enjoying the sun, wear sunscreen SPF 30+ (higher for kids)
🏠 Keep yourself and your home cool

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and look out for others too - especially older people and those vulnerable.

Changes to How You Request GP Appointments

Following the introduction of the new NHS GP contract in April, we are making changes to how GP appointment requests are managed at Knowsley Medical Centre.
As we have shared in our previous posts, we have been accepting both telephone and online GP appointment requests while introducing the new system. From now on, all GP appointment requests – both routine and same-day (urgent) – should be submitted using our online request link rather than by calling the practice.
We will also no longer routinely pre-book GP appointments. Instead, every request submitted through our online system will be reviewed by our clinical team, who will assess your needs and ensure you are directed to the most appropriate clinician or service. This allows us to prioritise patients according to clinical need, make the best use of available appointments, and improve access to care.
What this means for you:
✅ Increased appointment capacity
✅ Faster assessment of your appointment request
✅ Quicker access to the most appropriate clinician
✅ Patients prioritised according to clinical need
✅ A more efficient and responsive service for everyone
If you are unable to complete an online request yourself, our reception team will be happy to help you submit one.
