Q is for Quadratus Lumborum (QL)
Often referred to as the „hip hiker,” the Quadratus Lumborum is a deep, thick muscle located in the posterior abdominal wall that spans from the lowest rib down to the top of the pelvic bone. Because the QL is responsible for stabilizing the spine and facilitating lateral flexion (side-bending), it is a frequent source of lower back pain and can lead to a „high hip” when tight. In a massage setting, therapists can help release this deep-seated tension through targeted myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and sustained, broad pressure. For clients, incorporating gentle side stretches and maintaining good posture are essential self-care steps to keep the QL supple and pain-free.
