An open letter to Backyard Ultra Races.
As an osteopath and musculoskeletal healthcare professional, I spend my career encouraging people to move.
I tell patients that exercise reduces pain, improves mental health, builds resilience and adds years to life. I encourage people to find an activity they love or enjoy because enjoyment is what makes movement sustainable.
Backyard Ultra enters the chat….
Running has always been remarkably simple and joyous as a result. Fresh air. Movement. Friends. Freedom.
Backyard Ultra’s take this wonderful combination, set fire to them and replace them with misery and boredom.
I will now be actively encouraging patients to give up Backyard Ultras and to find a sensible alternative like Zumba, Wii Fit or even Pickle Ball.
For the avoidance of doubt, in the world of spin and fake truths. Movement is medicine. Misery isn’t. Cease and desist!

PS. This has absolutely nothing to do with the absolute thrashing my hips, knees, soul, ego and mental health took yesterday at a Back Yard Ultra. It’s the principle of the matter!
PPS. Moar Events it was lovely. Thank you for a great but completely intolerable day out. Yes it was only a day out 😪
