"You can't help but think that, were Howden Dam to be built today, the architecture would be much more functional and far less beautiful. Happily, those who designed it more than a century ago saw fit to make its towers soar out of the water like the turrets of a sunken castle or the spires of drowned churches. I hope they lived to see their hard work and vision reflected in the still water on a misty Autumn morning."
