Sometimes I think midlife is a time when we can feel a little lost.
Our children grow up, leave home and start their own lives.
The roles we've had for so many years begin to change. And then there's the other side of getting older.
Watching our parents age, losing people we love, and realising that life isn't always going to be as we've known it.
Today is World Mental Health Day, and I wanted to share something very personal.
This is my beautiful mum. Also known as Rickki Rainbow.
A woman with the most wonderful free spirit, a wild side, a love of life and so much personality.
Mum has Dementia
Watching her disappear little by little, day by day, month by month, year by year, breaks my heart.
Because somewhere in there, she's still my mum.
The fun, the laughter, the grandma, the wild spirit. The woman who made music, lived life and was never afraid to be herself.
And every so often, I catch a glimpse of her.
Just a little moment. Something she says, a look, a smile. And there she is. My mum.
I think one of the hardest things about midlife is that while we're trying to work out who we are now, we're also learning to live with the changes happening to the people around us.
And sometimes that's really hard.
We don't always talk about that sadness, or the feeling of being lost ourselves while we're slowly losing someone we love.
So today, I suppose I just wanted to acknowledge that.
She's still in there. And I treasure every little glimpse of her. ❤️
