I hear so many people say to me:
1. “Cut a little deeper so more blood comes out.”
2. “I don’t care if it scars me; I’m old.”
3. “Put more cups on and take out as much as you can.”
4. “Make the cups tighter. I can handle the pain.”
But here’s my perspective as a practitioner:
1. Deeper does NOT mean better- the goal should never be to cut deeper or draw more blood. Unnecessary cutting increases the risk of scarring, infection, and blood loss. Your safety should always come first.
2. Your age will never make your wellbeing less important- whether you’re young or older, your skin, health, and comfort matter. We are here to care for people, not to cause unnecessary injury. Responsible practice means knowing our limits and putting your wellbeing first.
3. Quality over quantity always- more cups and more blood do not automatically mean better results. Treatment should never be about how much blood can be drawn. It should be approached thoughtfully, with proper hygiene, an understanding of the risks, and respect for the individual.
4. Pain tolerance is not a measure of treatment effectiveness- just because you can tolerate discomfort doesn’t mean you should have to. Stronger suction isn’t necessarily better, and cupping should never be a competition to see who can tolerate the most.
Your health matters. Your skin matters. Your safety matters. Your body is an amanah, that is entrusted upon me too.
