Today is International ME Awareness Day, with people and organisations across the world coming together to recognise and support those affected by Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

First established in 1992, International ME Awareness Day is held each year on 12 May - the birthday of Florence Nightingale - who is believed by many historians to have experienced a chronic illness consistent with ME/CFS later in life.

Research suggests the prevalence of ME/CFS has increased by 62% since the pandemic, yet it is still so widely misunderstood - making awareness and education more important than ever.

Across the UK and internationally, buildings and landmarks are being illuminated in blue today in recognition of ME Awareness Day, helping to shine a light on the realities faced by those living with these invisible illnesses.
