My clients know I’m not a huge advocate for foam rolling — especially for ITB symptoms.
That said, some people do feel better afterwards and enjoy it. But I always hear:
“It hurts SO bad on my ITB.”
Here’s why 👇
The iliotibial band (ITB) is a thick, dense band of connective tissue. It’s supposed to be tight.
Yes, people can get symptoms around this area — like many connective tissues in the body — but trying to “loosen” the ITB itself is often extremely painful, with very little actual loosening happening.
Instead, try foam rolling the muscles that attach into the ITB:
• TFL (tensor fasciae latae)
• Gluteus medius
Usually less pain… and better chance of “loosening”. 💪
