❤️ ADHD parents: your child's behaviour doesn't make you a bad parent.

Have you ever felt like the worst parent in the world after your child shouted at you, ignored you, rejected your affection or refused to do what you asked?

Do you go from feeling frustrated to feeling like you've failed as a parent in seconds? Do you replay the situation, feel overwhelmed by guilt, or wonder why your emotions feel so BIG?

If you have ADHD, you may experience emotional dysregulation and rejection sensitivity. You might also relate to what many people call Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) — an intense emotional response to perceived rejection, criticism or failure.

When your child misbehaves, it can sometimes feel personal, even when their behaviour isn't necessarily a rejection of you.

❤️ You can be a good parent and still struggle with rejection sensitivity.

You can love your children deeply and still find parenting emotionally overwhelming. Understanding your triggers can help you respond to yourself and your children with more compassion.

I'm Sam, a late-diagnosed ADHDer, Neurodiversity & ADHD Coach, and I help people better understand their brains, recognise their needs and find practical strategies that work for them.

Does your child's behaviour trigger your ADHD rejection sensitivity or what people call RSD? ❤️
When your child ignores you, shouts at you or refuses to listen, it can trigger intense feelings of rejection, shame, anger or self-doubt.
For some PeopleWhoHaveADHD, emotional regulation can be particularly challenging. In the heat of the moment, your child's behaviour can feel personal — even when it isn't necessarily rejection.
Try these 3 strategies:
🛑 PAUSE: Breathe and notice your emotional triggers.
❤️ SEPARATE: Your child's behaviour doesn't define your worth as a parent.
💛 RESPOND: Regulate your emotions, then set a clear boundary.
You don't have to ignore difficult behaviour to be an emotionally responsive parent.
You can hold your child accountable without beating yourself up, too.
Save this for your next parenting trigger. ❤️

It's exhausting trying to be the version of yourself that you think everyone else wants. But trying to make yourself impossible to reject isn't the same as being accepted for who you truly are. If you relate to this, you're not alone.

What if they're right? 💙 Rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD) and ADHD can make rejection feel like confirmation of your negative self-talk, especially if you're a late-diagnosed ADHDer who's spent years criticising yourself. Just because someone hurt you doesn't mean they're right about you. I'm Sam, a neurodiversity coach and late-diagnosed ADHDer, sharing ADHD tips and strategies for adults who want to understand their brains and thrive. Am I being too sensitive, or am I actually being treated badly? 🧠
For some PeopleWhoHaveADHD, rejection sensitivity can make it incredibly difficult to know whether you're reacting to what actually happened or what you think happened.
So try CHECK:
C — Consider what actually happened.
H — Have I got evidence?
E — Explore another explanation.
C — Communicate instead of mind-reading.
K — Keep checking how they respond.
Because sometimes your brain is filling in the gaps.
And sometimes… something genuinely isn't okay.
The answer isn't automatically blaming yourself OR automatically blaming the other person.
Feel it. Check it. Then decide.
Save this for your next rejection sensitivity spiral. ❤️

What if someone knows how badly you fear rejection… and keeps pulling you in, then pushing you away? 💔
For some PeopleWhoHaveADHD, rejection sensitivity can make it incredibly difficult to recognise when a relationship is genuinely affecting your wellbeing.
You might keep thinking:
“Am I being too sensitive?”
“Have I done something wrong?”
But if you've communicated, tried to repair things, and the same painful pattern continues…
Pay attention.
Protecting yourself isn't rejecting someone.
Sometimes it's finally choosing not to reject yourself.
Save this if you need the reminder. ❤️
