How often a conversation starts about one thing and within seconds becomes…

“But what about them?”

“Yes, but…”

“What about this?”

There’s actually a name for it.

Whataboutism.

I wonder if social media is training us to think this way.

Not because people are deliberately trying to mislead us.

More because our brains are becoming used to endless distraction and endless comparisons.

Before we’ve had time to properly think about one issue, we’re already being shown another.

Then another.

Then another.

As someone who talks a lot about protecting our nervous systems and using our thinking brain, I’ve become much more aware of it.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t question things.

Far from it.

Or that we shouldn’t point out genuine hypocrisy.

But sometimes I catch myself thinking…

“Hang on. What was the original question?”

It’s such a simple thing but I think it’s helping me to stay more balanced and less emotionally pulled around by all the noise.

Have you noticed this too?

Update:

Tom has reached the point where Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany meet. Three countries in one day. 🌍🚲

He’s only been gone a week and has already managed more countries than I usually manage in a year.

Meanwhile, I’ve managed Whitstable, Chatham and
to be fair, Gloucestershire at the weekend.

I’m also slightly obsessed with all the little moments that happen along the way.

Please watch until the end because the lady who suddenly appears makes me smile.

She’s just spotted Tom’s wooden bike and seems fascinated by it.

I think it makes the whole video. I feel like she represents every single person who has seen this wooden bike so far. 😂

The world is not always as it seems.

Yesterday I was in Dover with Tom before he set off on the first stage of his round-the-world cycling adventure.

Over coffee we found ourselves talking about something that doesn’t often make the news.

Kindness.

Tom was telling me about the people he has met through the cycling community. Complete strangers who open their homes, offer a meal, share local knowledge or simply make someone feel welcome.

It got me thinking.

Lately I’ve found myself feeling quite fed up with the negativity that seems to surround us. The headlines. The outrage. The endless arguments on social media.

It’s easy to start believing that this is what the world is really like.

But it isn’t the whole picture.

As I often tell my clients, when we’re stressed or fearful, our brains naturally focus on threat. We notice what is loud, dramatic and alarming.

Sometimes we need to pause and take a wider view.

Most people are simply getting on with their lives.

Looking after their families.

Walking the dog.

Checking on neighbours.

Helping strangers.

Being kind when nobody is watching.

This little video is my rebellion against all the noise.

A reminder to myself that while fear can be loud, kindness is everywhere.

Anxiety can be incredibly convincing.

It tells us something terrible is about to happen.

That we won’t cope.

That we need to keep worrying just in case.

But anxious thoughts are predictions, not facts.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is pause and ask:

“What evidence do I actually have?”

Not every thought deserves your attention.

Not every worry deserves your belief.

And not every scary story your brain tells you will come true.

💭 Your thoughts matter.

But they’re not always telling the truth.

What anxious thought has your brain been trying to convince you of lately?

🙋‍♀️Have you noticed your confidence isn’t quite where it used to be?

Not because anything terrible has happened.

Not because you’ve suddenly become incapable.

But because somewhere along the way you’ve become exhausted from holding everything together.

Many women I speak to don’t describe a lack of confidence as standing up and giving a presentation.

They describe:

📉second-guessing themselves

📉worrying they’ve said the wrong thing

📉avoiding situations they used to enjoy

📉feeling less sure of their decisions

📉wondering why they suddenly feel so self-conscious

The interesting thing is that confidence often disappears quietly.

Stress.
Poor sleep.
Anxiety.
Overwhelm.
Perimenopause.

They all have a way of turning the volume down on self-belief.

The good news?

🌸Confidence isn’t usually something that’s lost forever.

🌸It’s something that can be rebuilt.

🌸Sometimes it starts with understanding what has been getting in the way of it.

Have you noticed any changes in your confidence?

Just in case anyone is wondering…

No, I haven’t retrained as a website designer, SEO consultant, digital marketing expert or AI prompt engineer. 🤣

It’s simply that every time I think this website is finished, my website provider’s AI decides to “help”.

This morning’s helpful suggestion?

Apparently every other sentence should include:

“Perimenopause hypnotherapist near me.”

Because obviously that’s exactly how real humans talk.

“Morning Susan. Fancy a coffee?”

“No thanks, I’m looking for a perimenopause hypnotherapist near me.” ☕️

So my Sunday morning has involved removing random AI-generated phrases and trying to make my website sound like an actual person wrote it.

Again.

The irony is that AI is convinced it knows what you’re searching for.

I’m fairly sure you’re not wandering around Kent muttering:

“Must find perimenopause therapist near me…”

Anyway, if you’ve visited my website recently and noticed it sounding slightly more human, you’re welcome.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with the delete key.

Here’s the progress so far:👇

One minute you’re absolutely fine.

The next you’re fighting back tears because somebody asked what’s for dinner.

Or because the supermarket queue is moving slowly.

Or because your husband has apparently forgotten how to chew quietly.

Sound familiar?

Many women are surprised by how emotional perimenopause can feel.

They expect hot flushes.

They don’t expect to feel more sensitive, more reactive or closer to tears than they used to.

But there are real reasons for this.

Hormonal fluctuations, disrupted sleep, stress, overwhelm and a nervous system carrying far too much for far too long can all make emotions feel much closer to the surface.

It doesn’t mean you’re weak.

It doesn’t mean you’re “losing it”.

And it certainly doesn’t mean you’re failing to cope.

Often it’s a sign that your brain and body need a little more support and a little less self-criticism.

Sometimes the most helpful thing you can hear is:

“This actually makes sense.”

Which of these affects you most right now?

You’ve had the holiday.
You’ve had the weekend.

You may even have had an afternoon doing absolutely nothing.

And yet somehow by Tuesday you’re exhausted again.

Sound familiar?

Many women assume they need more rest.

Sometimes they do.

But often the problem isn’t a lack of rest.

It’s the sheer amount they’re carrying.

The mental load.

The emotional load.

The responsibility load.

The invisible load.

Perimenopause can make the nervous system more sensitive to stress at exactly the same time life is asking a lot of us.

Work.

Family.

Ageing parents.

Relationships.

Finances.

Everyone else’s needs.

And if sleep has become disrupted too, even small demands can start to feel overwhelming.

That’s why a weekend away doesn’t always fix it.

Recovery isn’t always about stopping.

Sometimes it’s about reducing the load.

Being kinder to yourself.

Letting go of impossible standards.

Getting support.

And recognising that constantly pushing through isn’t a sustainable long-term strategy.

What part of the load feels heaviest for you right now?

Have you ever noticed that sometimes a holiday doesn’t fix the exhaustion?

You come back determined to feel refreshed.

For a few days you do.

Then the anxiety creeps back in.

The overwhelm returns.

Your patience disappears.

And you’re left wondering what happened.

Many women in perimenopause assume they’re simply not resting enough.

But often that’s not the whole story.

Because exhaustion isn’t always caused by doing too much.

Sometimes it’s caused by carrying too much.

The mental load.

The emotional load.

The responsibility of remembering everything, organising everything and worrying about everyone else.

Add disrupted sleep, fluctuating hormones and a nervous system that’s been running on high alert for months or years and suddenly even ordinary life can start feeling hard work.

That’s why “just have a break” doesn’t always solve the problem.

A weekend away can give your body a rest.

But it can’t automatically switch off the pressure you’ve been carrying in your head.

Sometimes the question isn’t:

“How can I get more rest?”

It’s:

“What am I carrying that was never meant to be carried alone?”

I’d be interested to know…

Have you ever come back from a holiday and still felt exhausted a week later?
