Maximising the volume of milk your baby gets at each feed will really help with weight gain.

➡️Always think in terms of volume rather than ‘type’ of milk.

➡️Keep your baby actively drinking during feeds.

➡️ Remember compressions and switching sides to increase the volume of milk your baby gets. More milk=more calories=more weight gain!

There aren’t really ‘rules’ with laid back breastfeeding.

It’s more about working with both your baby’s and your anatomy and finding the angels and adjustments that make feeding comfy and sustainable.

Relaxing your outer arm and using it as a guide or buffer to prevent baby wriggling off your body can help. And sometimes using the crook of your arm to support their head (but not limit the movement) can help too.

What worked for you?

What’s involved with a home visit?

-You contact me via message, phone call, email or even Insta!

-We arrange a day and time that works for your family. Often within 48 hours of your initial contact.

-I send a confirmation of the appointment and my intake form so I have a little health history ahead of our time together

-I arrive at your home. You don’t have to go anywhere. It’s absolutely fine (and encouraged) for you to be home in your comfies or PJs!

-The visit itself will be led by what you need: whether that be positioning support, help with a feeding plan, help using a tool like a shield or a supplementer, reassurance and encouragement, or something else.

-I can weigh baby if necessary and plot their growth so we have clear info to work from.

-Home visits usually last around an hour and a half/2hours but sometimes are shorter.

-I can show you different feeding positions around your home to help you be comfy. And we can take photos and little videos of them together to help you remember what we do.

-After the visit we’ll keep in touch via a WhatsApp chat. I’m happy to offer ongoing WhatsApp support for 2 weeks after the visit. And we can extend this if you’d like to too. The WhatsApp chat can be really helpful for sending videos and photos too, hopefully as things improve for your baby and you.

-I’ll also send you an invoice after the visit that can be paid via bank transfer.

Please get in touch if you’d like to chat about this more, or even better get a visit booked in!

Feeding to sleep is a super power, and if it’s working for your baby and you, there’s absolutely no reason not to! 🦸‍♀️

This can continue for as long as you’re both happy to. If it’s working, it’s working.

You’re not setting up bad habits, or making your baby too dependant on you…you’re being responsive to your baby, and using your nature-given gift to do this!

Don’t forget no child will feed to sleep forever…like all stages of parenthood this is a phase. 🥰

Do formula companies sabotage breastfeeding?

The bottle of formula comes in a packet of 6 marketed as a ‘First Baby Milk Formula Starter Pack From Birth’.

Although it comes with a disclaimer on the box that ‘Newborn babies may take only small amounts of infant formula to start with’ what sort of message does the size of this bottle send to parents worried that their newborn is having enough of their breastmilk?

Research tells us that on average in the first 24 hours a newborn’s feed will average about 7ml...meaning this bottle is 10 TIMES larger!

For many new babies 4-5 swallows of colostrum per feed is all they need in the first 24 hours.

The formula company also advises that once opened any unused formula be disposed of within one hour meaning a lot is going to be wasted in this kit making it an expensive and non environmentally friendly option.
