We thrive when we feel connected.

This week, we’re shining a light on something that’s often overlooked in recovery: the role of community in mental wellbeing.

For people recovering from brain injury, the emotional impact can be just as significant as the physical, especially when the journey feels isolating or misunderstood.

At Cortex Rehabilitation, we believe community is essential to healing. It can look like:
🤝 A therapist who listens without judgement
🏡 A family learning and adapting together
💬 A peer who truly understands
🌱 A workplace offering space, support and flexibility

These kinds of connections don’t just support mental health, they help rebuild confidence, identity, and quality of life.

Recovery isn’t just clinical.
It’s human. It’s emotional. And it’s better with support.

Let’s keep reminding each other: mental health is health 💚

🧠 Did you know?
Every day in May, 240 people in the UK will experience the life-changing impact of a stroke.

A stroke doesn’t just affect physical movement, it can impact brain health, communication, memory, emotions, and independence. Early recognition and treatment make a huge difference in recovery outcomes.

That’s why it’s so important to know the signs—and not just the traditional FAST signs.
We also encourage awareness of the BE FAST campaign, which highlights additional symptoms that could signal a stroke:

✔️ B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance or coordination
✔️ E – Eyes: Sudden blurred or double vision, or loss of vision

✔️ F – Face: Face drooping or numbness
✔️ A – Arms: Weakness or numbness in one arm
✔️ S – Speech: Slurred or confused speech
✔️ T – Time to call emergency services immediately

BE FAST - it can save lives and improve recovery outcomes.

After a brain injury, it’s common for people to feel like they’ve lost parts of who they were.

Memory changes, physical differences, emotional struggles, they can all make someone question, “Am I still me?”

But the truth is:
• You are not just what you can or can’t do.
• You are not only your symptoms or your challenges.
• You are still whole and you are evolving.

At Cortex Rehabilitation, we see that recovery is not about “getting back” to who you were.
It’s about growing forward, honouring the past, while embracing a new and meaningful future.

An identity shift after injury is real.
It’s complex.
But it’s also a chance to redefine what strength, success, and connection mean to you.

💬 If you’ve experienced this, what’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself along the way?

Fatigue after a brain injury isn’t just feeling tired, it’s a deep, cognitive exhaustion that can affect everything 🧠💬

It can be triggered by busy places, too much noise, concentrating for long periods, or even just trying to get through a normal day.

And it’s not always predictable. Some days might feel okay. Other days, even small tasks feel overwhelming.

If you’re dealing with post-brain injury fatigue, here are a few things that might help:
✔️ Take regular breaks (even short ones!)
✔️ Break tasks down into smaller, manageable steps
✔️ Plan quiet time into your day
✔️ Be kind to yourself—resting is part of recovery, not a step backwards

You don’t have to push through or explain your fatigue to anyone who doesn’t understand. What matters is giving yourself permission to listen to your body 💙

I’m really looking forward to tuning in to NR Times Live this week – an online event bringing together voices from across the neuro-rehab community to explore the future of rehabilitation.

The virtual conference will cover some really important topics, including:
✔️ Early intervention
✔️ Long-term rehab pathways
✔️ Vocational reintegration
✔️ And the power of lived experience in shaping services that truly make a difference

It’s a brilliant opportunity to hear from case managers, clinicians, legal professionals, and people with direct experience of brain injury—each offering valuable insight into what meaningful, forward-thinking neuro-rehab can look like.

Progress can be messy, slow, and unpredictable and that’s okay.

Some days will feel like a step forward, others like a pause… but every part of the process is valid.

Take the pressure off. Healing isn’t a race.

Not all wounds are visible.

Brain injuries often come with hidden symptoms, things others might not see, but that deeply affect everyday life. From exhaustion and memory issues to emotional changes and feeling misunderstood, these invisible challenges deserve recognition and support.

💙 At Cortex Rehabilitation, we work with individuals navigating these hidden struggles helping them rebuild confidence, independence, and self-compassion.

Let’s keep raising awareness. Because what you can’t see still matters. Share this with someone who needs a little reminder they are doing great 💪

As Brain Tumour Awareness Month comes to an end, our commitment to raising awareness, supporting individuals, and advocating for better care continues.

Throughout March, we’ve shared key facts, highlighted the impact of brain tumours, and reinforced the importance of early detection and rehabilitation.

✔️ 12,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year.
✔️ Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40.
✔️ Research and rehabilitation are vital for improving quality of life after diagnosis.

💡 Awareness doesn’t stop here. Let’s keep the conversation going and continue to support those affected.

💬 What’s one thing you’ve learned this month that surprised you?
