Hot weather warning
Cardiff will be experiencing a period of significantly hot weather over the following week. Hot weather can lead to significant health problems for elderly and medically vulnerable. Simple actions can reduce the risk of these problems occurring.

Follow the link to the Public Health Wales website for information on what to do during the hot weather is you or someone you know maybe at risk from the hot weather: https://phw.nhs.wales/services-and-teams/environmental-public-health/weather-and-health1/extreme-hot-weather/

Main actions:
Keep the heat out of your house during the day.

Keep your body temperature down: stay out the sun in the middle of the day, reduce levels of physical activity, drink regularly (avoid caffeine (tea, coffee, colas), very sweet drinks and alcohol).

Provide extra care by regularly checking on those who are vulnerable.

Be alert for the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and know how to provide emergency treatment.

Wear sun screen and appropriate clothing (hat, loose fitting clothes).

Anyone can become unwell when the weather is hot. The main health risks in hot weather are dehydration (not drinking enough water), heat exhaustion and sunburn.

In line with Welsh Government access standard and provide an idea of the level of work carried out by the Practice, below is a dashboard showing a range of national indicators with figures drawn from the Practice’s records. This aims to give a transparent, standardised approach to reporting activity within the Practice and how it is communicated to the public. The figures will be updated when more up to date figures become available.

The met office are forecasting high temperatures today (19.06.25), tomorrow and into the weekend. Hot weather can have a serious impact on people's health especially those who are old, very young or have pre-existing health conditions (asthma, COPD, risk of heart attack or stroke, kidney disease, diabetes, pregnant.

Avoiding heat related health issues is easy to do and avoids extra strain on the NHS and care systems.

For further advise on what to do go to the Public Health Wales website: Extreme Hot Weather - Public Health Wales

Beware of the symptoms of heat problems in vulnerable people: Cramps, rashes, dizziness, fainting, swelling (especially ankles), heat exhaustion/stoke, dehydration.

Wear appropriate sun cream if out in the sun.

The surgery will start using the new EPS from 17 June 2025.

This means that prescriptions will now be sent directly to pharmacies also using EPS, so there is no need to collect a paper prescription form from the surgery.

Patients will need to go to a local pharmacy and ask to nominate that pharmacy as were the prescriptions will be sent. Repeat medication can still be requested in the normal way and can now also be requested using the new NHS Wales app (see separate news item for details).

The main difference is patients will no longer have the tick list on the right hand side of the prescription form, but can request a dispensing token, which should list all the medication prescribed when they collect medication from the nominated pharmacy.

Please see the link for further information on EPS: EPS for patients - Digital Health and Care Wales

We anticipate that it may take slightly longer to get requests processed and issued in the first few weeks after we start using EPS. Please bear with us during this initial period and plan ahead if you have regular repeat prescriptions.
