Calon Heart Screening and Defibrillators UK Charity aims to improve the accessibility and availability of lifesaving defibrillators across the c

ountry, which in turn, will help improve out-of-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes – currently, less than 1 in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK. Since 2012 Calon Heart Screening & Defibrillators UK has been very busy working on the widespread provision of defibrillators across UK and to date, we have placed over 26,000 Defibrillators in communities. In Wales, there are approximately 8,000 sudden cardiac arrests outside the hospital each year. It’s shocking that the survival rate is only 3%. Where an AED or Defibrillator is used, the survival rate can increase to up to 74%.

“Unfortunately, there are not enough defibrillators in the UK or trained people to give victims the best chance of survival during those first few critical minutes. With access to more defibrillators, we can provide a vital link in the chain of survival so that even more lives can be saved throughout the country. When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, their chances of survival drop by up to 14% for every minute that passes, so a speedy response is crucial. Therefore, early defibrillation – within four to five minutes – gives the best possible chance of survival.”

In addition to placing defibrillators and training people in CPR, our heart screening program is a vital part of our work. Our charitable heart screening program has already established the benefit of screening, having identified many people with life-changing and life-limiting cardiac conditions. To date, we have screened over 11,000 people for life-threatening heart conditions. For more info please visit our website at www.calonhearts.org

💛 This October, Wales is going yellow. 💛

From 1-16 October, we're asking you to join our Go Yellow Campaign, in memory of two young men whose lives were cut short: Kory Russell and Ben McDonald.

Ben's mum Ruth and Kory's mum Rhi now serve as President and Vice President of Calon Hearts. Rather than let grief have the final word, they've turned it into a mission: fewer families getting the phone call that changed everything for theirs.

Wear yellow to work or school. Hold a bake sale. Take on a sponsored challenge. However you choose to get involved, every pound raised helps us screen more hearts, train more people in CPR and put more defibrillators into communities across Wales.

Screen Early. Save Lives.

❤️ Sudden cardiac death in young people is finally receiving the attention it deserves in Parliament.

This week, MPs took part in an important debate on Sudden Cardiac Death: Young People, called by Greg Smith MP following the tragic death of his constituent Adam Ankers, who died while playing football for the Wycombe Wanderers Foundation’s Under-19 team.

During the debate, MPs shared the stories of other young people whose lives have been lost suddenly, and spoke about the remarkable work their families have carried out in their memory.

Crucially, the discussion also highlighted the importance of cardiac screening and what more can be done to prevent future tragedies.

At Calon Hearts, this is something we see first-hand.

We have now screened more than 38,000 people, helping to identify potentially serious heart conditions in people who may otherwise have had no idea anything was wrong.

We recognise the vital work of Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), the families who continue to campaign for change, and the MPs helping to keep this issue firmly on the political agenda.

And while this particular debate took place at Westminster, sudden cardiac death does not recognise borders. Here in Wales, we will continue to campaign for prevention, greater awareness and better access to cardiac screening.

Every young life lost is one too many. Every opportunity to identify a potentially life-threatening heart condition before tragedy strikes matters.

Screen Early. Save Lives. ❤️

📅 Saturday – just 2 places left
📅 Sunday – just 2 places left

So whether you’re bringing your son, daughter, partner or another loved one along this weekend, why not make looking after your own heart part of the day too? ❤️

❤️ We’re absolutely thrilled to share some more fantastic awards news! ❤️

Calon Hearts has been named a finalist for Charity of the Year at the Cardiffian Community Awards 2026! 🏆

And that’s not all… we’re incredibly proud to have TWO more reasons to celebrate:

❤️ Our very own Sharon Owen is a finalist for Individual Fundraiser of the Year

🎅 Our much-loved Santa Dash is a finalist for Event of the Year!

To be recognised across three categories is absolutely wonderful and a real reflection of the incredible people who support Calon Hearts, fundraise for us, volunteer their time and help us continue our lifesaving work across communities.

We’re especially delighted to see Sharon’s tireless dedication recognised, and to see the Santa Dash – which is now in its 15th year! – up for an award of its own.

A huge thank you to everyone who has played a part in the Calon Hearts journey. ❤️

We can’t wait for the awards ceremony at Cardiff Theatre Café on 3rd October – fingers firmly crossed! 🤞🏆
