3 Ways Anxiety is Helping You

Anxiety is something that I have been helping people manage for over a decade, I have even written a book on it and created a helpful journal. Most of the time, when we discuss anxiety we focus upon its harmful impact upon our life. However, understanding the evolutionary basis of anxiety can shed light on its role in motivating behaviour and its potential benefits.

A piece of advice I regularly share with clients is that "Not all anxiety is bad". That's not to diminish your experience of anxiety, but it is sometimes helpful to identify the reason we feel anxious, to help manage anxiety and understand the potential benefits of feeling it.

1. Heightened Awareness
Anxiety is not a modern phenomenon; it has deep evolutionary roots. Our ancestors relied on anxiety to survive in a world filled with physical dangers. This heightened state of awareness made them more attuned to their surroundings, enabling them to detect threats quickly. Today, this aspect of anxiety can still serve a beneficial purpose. It makes you more vigilant and prepares you to react to potential dangers. Whether you're navigating busy streets or assessing risks in your environment, anxiety helps keep you safe by enhancing your sensory perception and attention to detail.

2. Motivation and Preparation
Anxiety also plays a critical role in motivation and preparation. The discomfort it brings can be a powerful motivator, pushing you to prepare more thoroughly for upcoming challenges. For instance, anxiety about an upcoming exam or presentation can encourage you to study harder or prepare more meticulously, ultimately improving your performance. This kind of anxiety acts as a signal, indicating that something important is at stake and that you need to take action to ensure a positive outcome. By driving you to take necessary precautions and prepare adequately, anxiety helps you achieve goals and face challenges more effectively.

3. Encouraging Social Cohesion
From an evolutionary perspective, anxiety has been crucial in maintaining social cohesion. Our ancestors needed to cooperate and maintain strong social bonds to survive. Anxiety about fitting in or being accepted by the group encouraged behaviours that strengthened social ties, such as empathy, communication, and collaboration. Today, while the fear of social rejection can be stressful, it also motivates us to be more attentive and considerate in our social interactions. By fostering a sense of empathy and understanding, anxiety can lead to deeper, more meaningful relationships.

Whilst we can see some benefits for feeling anxious, this of course is not everybody's experience. Persistent anxiety can be incredibly debilitating, so how do you know when anxiety has moved beyond helpful and is a problem?

Anxiety becomes a problem when it is disproportionate to the situation, persists even when the stressor is gone, or interferes with your ability to function in daily life. Symptoms can range from constant worry and restlessness to physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, and difficulty sleeping.

If you find that anxiety is overwhelming, persistent, and impacting your quality of life, it may be time to seek help. Effective treatments, including therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes, can help manage anxiety. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength and the first step towards regaining control of your life.

Understanding the evolutionary basis and beneficial aspects of anxiety can change how we perceive this common emotion. While it has its downsides, recognising the ways anxiety helps us can lead to a more balanced and compassionate approach to managing it. However, it's crucial to remain vigilant about the line between helpful anxiety and harmful anxiety. By acknowledging when anxiety becomes overwhelming and seeking appropriate help, you can ensure that this ancient survival mechanism works for you, not against you.

Case Study: Living with Anxiety for 30 Years & What Finally Worked

For over three decades, Rachel* had lived with anxiety. Not just the occasional nerves or worry, but a deep, all consuming anxiety that shaped every part of her life. Relationships, work, health; they were all impacted by a silent, persistent undercurrent of fear.

When Rachel came to me, they were desperate. They’d reached a point where the anxiety had returned yet again but this time, with more intensity than ever before. The waves of panic, the feeling of being on edge, the physical symptoms were all overwhelming, and all seemingly without a clear trigger.

This wasn’t her first attempt to seek help. She had seen multiple doctors, had taken anti-anxiety medication, and had even had periods of time where she felt she was coping. But every time Rachel thought she was making progress, the anxiety would "randomly" return leaving her feeling like she was back at square one.

And that’s exactly where the problem had always been.

The Missing Piece
When we began working together, one of the first things I noticed was that despite years of reaching out for help, Rachel had never been taught to understand her experience of anxiety. No one had explained the nervous system, how anxiety works, or what it truly means to regulate it.

Every intervention she had tried had focused on the surface: the symptoms. The racing thoughts. The insomnia. The overwhelm. But none had addressed the cause. There had been no tools, no strategies, no deeper work to build emotional resilience or retrain the brain's response to stress.

Without this foundation, it makes perfect sense that the anxiety kept returning because while the symptoms were managed, the system remained dysregulated.

What We Did Differently
At Beam Therapy, our approach is different. It’s not about quick fixes or masking symptoms, it’s about giving clients the tools, understanding, and support to change their relationship with anxiety for good.

With this client, we started by demystifying what anxiety actually is. We talked about the nervous system, how anxiety is a natural response that becomes stuck, and why certain techniques work to re-regulate the system.

From there, we used psycho-sensory and somatic tools such as Havening Techniques, functional breathwork, and emotional regulation exercises to calm the body and retrain the mind. We worked with both the conscious and subconscious mind, rewiring beliefs, clearing past emotional imprints, and building new neural pathways for peace and confidence.

We didn’t just manage the anxiety but we helped her to understand it, process it, and feel safe within herself again.

The Transformation
After just a few sessions, Rachel began to notice subtle but profound changes. Her nervous system started to feel calmer. She no longer feared the anxiety returning, because now, she knew what to do. She had tools. She had understanding. She had choices.

For the first time in over 30 years, she felt hopeful, not just about managing anxiety, but about living life with freedom from it.

If You’re Struggling Too…
Please know that real, lasting change is possible. Whether anxiety has been with you for months or a lifetime, you do not have to keep navigating it alone and you don’t have to wait until you're in crisis to start healing.

If you're ready to work 1:1, we offer compassionate, science-backed therapy tailored to you.

Most people try to think their way out of stress.

But stress isn't just in your mind, it's also in your body.

When your system is overloaded or overstimulate , your brain is constantly scanning for threat, even when nothing is wrong. This helps explain why you might feel wired but tired, tense without realising and unable to properly switch off.

This is where progressive muscle relaxation comes in.

By gently tensing and releasing different muscle groups, you're sending a signal back to the brain that it is safe to relax.

Don't believe us, give it a go

Try this

Take just 6 minutes to reset your mind and body with this guided Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) session. Perfect for stress relief, anxiety management, ...

THERAPIST NOTES: The One About Grief

Some things change us forever.

Loss, in all its forms, doesn’t just leave a space. It reshapes us. It shifts how we see the world, how we move through it, and who we are in it.

And yet, we often expect ourselves to "get over it." To tidy it up. To put it in a box and get on with things.

But that’s not how grief works.

I’ve supported so many people through grief in the therapy room. And I’ve walked through it myself many times. Some of the losses I’ve shared openly, like losing my dad. Others I’ve held quietly.

And here’s what I know for sure:

Grief doesn’t have a deadline.

It doesn’t move in a straight line.

And it doesn’t mean you’re broken.

It just means you loved.

This is a note I wrote to myself (Note in the picture). And maybe it’s for you too.

If you’ve had a wave of sadness hit you recently, seemingly out of nowhere, at the “wrong” time, without explanation, please know, you’re not doing it wrong. You’re not stuck. You haven’t failed. You’re just human.

And even if the rest of the world has moved on…It’s okay that your heart hasn’t fully caught up.

You are still healing. And you are still whole.

With love, Lianne x

THERAPIST NOTES: The One About Being Strong

When you’re praised for always being strong, it becomes a quiet pressure.

You start to believe that’s who you have to be. The one who gets on with it. The one who holds everyone together. The one who never crumbles.

Sometimes that’s what others expect. But more often, it’s a role we place on ourselves.

We’re so used to being reliable, capable, “fine” that we forget we’re allowed to not be okay.

This is a note I wrote to myself. And maybe, just maybe, it’s a note you need too.

There’s nothing wrong with being strong. But you’re allowed to have moments where you’re soft. Where you’re human. Where you don’t have it all figured out. Where you can ask for help and you don’t have to earn support. You’re allowed to be held, too.

With love, Lianne x

Something we've noticed coming up a lot recently is the conversation around being over overstimulated.

Constant noise. Notifications. Conversations. Decisions.

Your brain never really gets a chance to switch off.

From a neuroscience point of view, your system stays in a kind of low-level alert state, which is why you can feel:

– wired but tired
– restless
– unable to properly relax (even when you try)

So it’s not always that you need more rest…

it’s that your system needs less input.

Who is feeling overstimulated ?
