"After having my son on the 14th of August, I had a pretty tricky recovery period which resulted in being readmitted to the post natal ward shortly after being discharged due to becoming unwell with an infection.
Lilibeth [midwife] very kindly offered to look after my 6 day old baby overnight so that I could get a decent night sleep to aid my recovery. During the night, she noticed a change in his breathing and monitored him closely, and during this monitoring she identified a heart murmur. We had so many midwives and doctors come to us and praise her identification due to the murmur being almost impossible to hear.
A variety of tests followed for our little boy, and he was eventually diagnosed with a bicuspid valve and coarctation of the aorta. He was moved to the NICU straight away for monitoring then transferred to Bristol Children’s hospital for surgery on his heart in the following days. His condition deteriorated quickly after arriving at Bristol and within 24 hours, our 10 day old baby had heart surgery. If Lilibeth hadn’t identified his heart defect, he could have suffered from a cardiac arrest left untreated. We owe her a great debt in saving the life of our baby, there are no words to convey how grateful we are to her for her kindness and thoroughness in caring for our son.
The team at UHW really are incredible, from every porter, MCA, midwife, staff nurse and cardiologist we saw during our stay, they were all incredible. But I genuinely believe we’d be in a very different position had Lilibeth not identified the murmur when she did"
