We've reached a major milestone for primary care in Wales.

Every GP practice in Wales is now using EMIS Web, following the successful migration of 193 GP practices from Vision to a single clinical system.

Over the last year, more than 1.75 million patient records have been safely migrated and over 5,000 practice staff supported through the transition.

A huge thank you to GP practice teams, delivery partners and colleagues across NHS Wales who helped make this possible.

“I never thought I’d be running the London Marathon for something so personal.”

Paul Mason, Head of Information Standards, spent 15 years trying to get a place. This year, he finally did — running for the MS Society after his wife Sal was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

What started as a personal goal became something much bigger. Alongside raising over £4,000 for charity, Paul is now setting up a support group for carers in DHCW, creating space for colleagues who are balancing work with caring responsibilities to connect and support each other.

This Carers Week, we’re recognising the people who are supporting loved ones alongside their roles and the experiences that shape what they bring to work every day.

What if a confusing letter stopped someone getting care? 😟

In 2024, the Welsh Immunisation System (WIS) sent over 1 million COVID-19 appointment letters📮

Vaccination letters are vital in protecting community health, so getting them right really matters.

Our User Centred Design and WIS teams worked together to redesign the current format using research, content design and behavioural science.

Together we’ve:

✔ simplified content
✔ improved bilingual accessibility
✔ made key information easier to find

This makes them clearer, more accessible and easier to act on because small changes can remove real barriers to care.

One record, better care

Bwrdd Iechyd Addysgu Powys / Powys Teaching Health Board is the first in Wales to start both reading medicines on admission and writing discharge medicines with the Shared Medicines Record (SMR), a key component of the national Digital Medicines Programme.

🤔 What is the SMR?

The vision for the SMR is to be a consolidated and shared record of medicines, allergies and intolerances for every patient in Wales. This allows healthcare professionals to access the information they need without a patient having to provide the same details every time they see a new member of staff.

Bronllys Community Hospital in Brecon have started their digital journey with the SMR alongside their transition from paper charts at the bedside to the electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (ePMA) system.

A big congratulations to all the teams involved in achieving this milestone!

Last week we joined colleagues from across NHS Wales at the Digital Conference 2026 with the Welsh NHS Confederation.
A clear message came through: digital health works best when it’s built with people, not for them.

The day highlighted the importance of collaboration, from AI in healthcare to digital skills, strong foundations and human‑centred design.

Thank you to all speakers, exhibitors and supporters. By working together, we can ensure digital makes a real difference for patients and staff across Wales.

📱Electronic prescribing is now set to benefit more patients and healthcare staff at the Princess of Wales hospital in Bridgend.

The electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (ePMA) system went live across A&E, Medicine and Surgical wards, and our Hospital ePrescribing Clinical Lead, James Goddard, was on site for support.

💬“It was incredibly positive to see the level of engagement, enthusiasm and ownership from the ePMA team and everyone supporting the implementation at Princess of Wales Hospital.

“For me personally, it was rewarding to see the culmination of so much hard work and preparation from Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, Nervecentre and DHCW come to fruition. I was also able to observe how quickly staff began adopting the system in practice, with many picking it up confidently from the outset, and even hearing comments from nursing staff about how much they were enjoying using it.

"This marks another important step forward in improving patient safety and medicines optimisation through electronic prescribing.”

How do we build a healthier, better-connected Wales? It starts with data and working together.
The National Data Resource (NDR) is a long-term programme DHCW made up of teams across NHS Wales.

We are building a secure national framework to safely connect health and care data. From creating unified patient records to providing better insights for frontline staff, the NDR is the digital blueprint for the future of care in Wales.

It’s built in stages and entirely in partnership with NHS Wales, social care, clinicians, and Welsh Government. Digital health works best when it is built with people, not just for them.
