What do they actually learn before they can swim? πŸ’πŸ’¦

Before children learn to swim independently, they learn something even more important first - confidence and safety in the water.

During our lessons babies and toddlers gradually build the foundations that make swimming possible later on, including...
🫧 Getting comfortable being in the water
🫧 Feeling safe when splashing, pouring and moving around
🫧 Learning breath control (blowing bubbles is a big milestone!)
🫧 Developing balance and coordination with support
🫧 Trusting the water - and the grown-up with them!

These early skills might not look like β€œswimming” yet… but they are the stepping stones that make independent swimming so much easier in the future.

Every child progresses at their own pace, and we keep everything gentle, playful and pressure-free - and that’s exactly how it should be πŸ’š

🌟 Infant Mental Health Awareness Week 8th to 14th June 2026.

The infant brain is developing rapidly during these early years and children develop, grow and thrive in nurturing environments. This critical development between 0-3 years also includes the antenatal period.

The theme for Infant Mental Health Awareness Week (IMHAW) 2026 is 'Attunement'

Attunement is the ability to tune in and connect with others on an emotional level. It is important for everyone, but particularly for babies and their parents or carers. When adults are emotionally attuned to babies and young children they notice cues, validate children’s emotions and appropriately respond to them.

Attunement helps babies to feel safe and loved. It helps babies and younger children learn to regulate their emotions, supporting good infant mental health.

🌟 Plagiocephaly Pillows - Are they Safe? 🌟

They are neither safe or effective!

πŸ’« They restrict a baby's head and neck movements.
πŸ’« No evidence to suggest they are effective in preventing or treating a little one with positional plagiocephaly.
πŸ’« They go against all safe sleep guidance.
πŸ’« The NHS recommends nothing in cot with baby.

Plagiocephaly is the medical term used to describe the flattening of one side of a baby's head. It is most common in newborn babies as the bones that make up the skull remain soft, making them more susceptible to being flattened or moulded.

These problems are quite common, affecting around 1 in every 5 babies. In most cases they are not a cause for concern.

Early intervention is key πŸ”‘ Input from a Paediatric Physiotherapist when the baby is less than two months old produces the best outcomes for positional plagiocephaly.

πŸ’« Regular changes in positions.
πŸ’« Tummy Time & lots of floor play!
πŸ’« Engage in lots of play activities in different positions to bring weight off their head.
πŸ’« Use lots of visual and tactile stimulation to encourage turning of their head to both sides.

If you have concerns about your baby's development, make sure to attend a Chartered Physiotherapist who specialises in assessing, diagnosing and treating babies and young children.
