๐ŸŽ—๏ธ๐Ÿ’› Myles Update ๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŽ—๏ธ

Myles has had a lovely half-term, spending lots of quality time with family and friends. ๐Ÿฅฐ

We recently had a phone call with his cochlear implant support worker, who explained how the process will work moving forward.

Jon and I are feeling very nervous about this. We were told that if Myles is approved for bilateral implants, the surgery will likely remove any hearing he has left. We know that isn't a lot, but it is still something very important to him. ๐Ÿ’›

This also means that while Myles is recovering from surgery, he will be completely unaided for at least 7-10 days. We know how difficult this will be for him, and the thought of it is quite scary. However, as always, we will do whatever is best for Myles and support him every step of the way. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’›

This month is a big one, with appointments scheduled with most of Myles' consultants. As always, we will keep everyone updated. ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿ“…

We hope everyone had a wonderful half-term! โ˜€๏ธ

Myles had clinic yesterday, and the amazing news isโ€ฆ

โœจ MYLES IS STILL CANCER FREE!!! โœจ

His scans are all looking good, and his bloods are looking good too! Weโ€™re just waiting for the urine test results to come back now. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’›

We are so incredibly proud of our little superhero, he truly is amazing ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฆธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Myles has his barium swallow next Friday (stomach X-rays to see why he is still vomiting). As always, weโ€™ll keep everyone updated with the results. ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿ’›

Thank you all so much for the continued love, support, and prayers. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŽ— Myles Update ๐ŸŽ—๐Ÿ’›

All of Mylesโ€™ bloods are looking good from a cancer point of view ๐Ÿ˜

After speaking with Mylesโ€™ oncology consultant, weโ€™ve now had the outcome from the team meeting where they discussed his hearing and whether he should return to his maintenance treatment.

Chemotherapy has caused most of the damage to Mylesโ€™ hearing. Although DFMO has also had some impact, the hearing loss he already has is considered severe. Because of this, we can confirm that Myles will continue his maintenance treatment at half the dose, starting his first dose tonight ๐Ÿ’Š

Due to how much his hearing has been affected, Myles has now been referred to the cochlear implant team, who will assess and look into possible implants for him ๐ŸŽง

Myles will have scans in May, along with his usual clinic appointments. As always, weโ€™ll keep everyone updated ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŽ— Myles Update ๐ŸŽ—๐Ÿ’›

A few things have happened since our last post, some good and some not so good. Weโ€™ll start with the negatives so we can finish on a positive note.

Myles had a hearing test to see if his hearing had returned to baseline after stopping the DFMO (maintenance treatment). Unfortunately, it hasnโ€™t improved and is still as bad as it was. Heโ€™s also been suffering from really bad ear infections, which have been so severe theyโ€™ve been making him vomit ๐Ÿ˜”

Positives โœจ

- Oncology are happy with Mylesโ€™ bloods ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

- Myles has been tolerating his new heart medication really well, with no problems, and is now on his full dose three times a day ๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿ’ช
-
His hair is starting to grow back ๐Ÿ˜

- Myles has just had his first day back at school from 11 till 2 and had a lovely time ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ’›

We are so proud of our little superhero โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’™

Myles has scans next month, so weโ€™ll continue to keep everyone updated.

๐ŸŽ—๐Ÿ’› Myles Update ๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŽ—

Good news! Everything went well today! ๐Ÿ˜€

Myles is now back home and doing well on his new medication, which heโ€™ll need to take three times a day. We also got to meet the cardiology specialist nurses, who will be there to help us with any problems or questions we may have going forward.

Myles has another appointment on Wednesday for his eyes. If we receive any results on the day, weโ€™ll be sure to update everyone. ๐Ÿ‘€

Thank you all so much for your prayers and kind words, it truly means a lot to us. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’›

Please keep Myles in your thoughts and prayers today ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’™

Weโ€™re on our way to the hospital so Myles can be observed while he takes his very first dose of heart medication. Weโ€™re praying that he tolerates the medication well and that heโ€™ll be home safe later today with no need for a hospital stay. ๐Ÿ™

As always, weโ€™ll keep everyone updated on how today goes.

๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŽ— Myles Update ๐ŸŽ—๐Ÿ’›

We now have a plan in place for Mylesโ€™ maintenance treatment with DFMO, a medication used to help prevent his cancer from returning.

Unfortunately, itโ€™s been confirmed that Myles has more hearing loss, so we have to pause the DFMO and follow protocol.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Within the next week, weโ€™ll travel to Newcastle to have his hearing aids turned up as much as possible. Heโ€™s becoming very frustrated with not being able to hear, which is heartbreaking to see. ๐Ÿ˜”

๐Ÿ‘‰ Over the next 30 days, heโ€™ll stay off DFMO and be put to sleep again to have new grommets fitted and another hearing test.

Thereโ€™s a 50% chance his hearing could improve now the medication has stopped. If it does, he can restart DFMO at a lower dose. If not, heโ€™ll need cochlear implants and wonโ€™t be able to continue the treatment.
On top of this, heโ€™ll also be starting new medication for his mild chronic heart failure. Weโ€™re praying this goes smoothly with no side effects. ๐Ÿ™

Despite everything, Myles still spends most of his days smiling and laughing. He amazes us every single day. ๐Ÿ’›โœจ

He is still cancer-free, and we pray that continues forever. ๐ŸŽ—

Weโ€™ll keep everyone updated.

With love,

The Loves โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŽ— MYLES UPDATE ๐ŸŽ—๐Ÿ’›

Key Information:

โ€ข Mylesโ€™ oncology consultant has had to stop his maintenance treatment (DFMO) due to hearing loss.

โ€ข His hearing has worsened - he has lost most high-frequency sounds and some low-frequency sounds.

โ€ข He has mild heart impairment.

โ€ข NO CANCER FOUND ON THE MRI!!!!! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŽ‰

Itโ€™s been a long two weeks for our family. We havenโ€™t posted an update because weโ€™ve been taking time to process all the information weโ€™ve received, and if Iโ€™m honest, weโ€™re still struggling. ๐Ÿ’”

On the 16th, Myles became unwell with a stomach bug. By the 18th, we had it too. What lasted 24 hours for us lasted a whole 7 days for Myles. He was vomiting so much, but thankfully heโ€™s now starting to feel better. ๐Ÿ’›

On Monday, Myles had his MRI to check there was no cancer and to look at his optic nerve. He also had his ears checked and had a hearing test.

We were extremely anxious about the hearing test. We had noticed Myles seemed less responsive to our voices, and we knew that if he had lost more hearing, they would stop his maintenance treatment, as thatโ€™s the protocol.

Sadly, we were right.

Last night, we received a phone call from Mylesโ€™ oncology consultant telling us to stop treatment because his hearing has worsened. ๐Ÿ’”

The treatment felt like a safety net for us, as it helps stop cells from multiplying and forming a tumour. Now, we wait. Tomorrow, the audiologist and oncologist will meet to decide what happens next, and then weโ€™ll be informed. ๐Ÿ™

Today, Myles had a heart check up. We were told he has mild heart impairment and will need to start new medication for his heart.

Since the MRI, Myles has really struggled from being put to sleep. He was extremely tired and sore, especially as they had difficulty accessing a vein. Now he tells us every day:

โ€œNo more magic sleep.โ€

โ€œNo mask.โ€

And itโ€™s absolutely heartbreaking. ๐Ÿ’”

As always, weโ€™ll keep everyone updated.

๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŽ— Myles Update ๐ŸŽ—๐Ÿ’›

We are so incredibly proud of our little man and everything heโ€™s achieved since the last update ๐Ÿฅฐ

Myles is wearing his oxygen full time at the moment. He technically only needs it while sleeping, but he doesnโ€™t like taking it off and putting it back on, so heโ€™d rather keep it on all the time and thatโ€™s absolutely fine with us as long as heโ€™s getting what he needs ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’›

Thursday was a very busy hospital day. We left the house at 8am and didnโ€™t get home until 7pmโ€ฆ it was a long one!

He had a scan and it was ALL CLEAR!!!!!! ๐Ÿฅณโœจ

Then followed bloods, obs, weight and height. Bloods were all good, height is on track, and heโ€™s lost a little bit of weight, nothing major, but weโ€™ll be keeping an eye on it ๐Ÿ‘€

Next, Myles had an appointment with the gastro consultant. Theyโ€™re organising a test to make sure his stomach isnโ€™t paralysed due to the ongoing random vomiting. Once the results are back, weโ€™ll sit down with the gastro doctor again to discuss next steps.

We then made our way from the RVI to the Freeman Hospital, where Myles had a hearing test. Heโ€™s already borderline needing cochlear implants; however, they couldnโ€™t get accurate results because his grommets have fallen out and he currently has a bad ear infection ๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿ˜ž

The plan is that when heโ€™s put to sleep on the 23rd, theyโ€™ll hopefully replace his grommets. If hearing loss is confirmed, heโ€™ll need support with cochlear implants.

Myles did amazing. It was such a long and tiring day for him, but he gave his best at every single appointment. He truly is our little superhero โค๏ธ๐Ÿฆธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŽ— Myles Update ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ๐Ÿ’›

We try our absolute hardest to stay positive, but sometimes itโ€™s incredibly difficult, and honestlyโ€ฆ weโ€™re struggling mentally. Thankfully, weโ€™re in therapy, but things are really hard right now, and hereโ€™s why ๐Ÿ’”

Last week, Myles had two tests:

- ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ An eye test (with eye drops)
- ๐Ÿ˜ด A sleep study

The eye test results showed that Myles has definite damage to the optic nerve in his left eye. His optic nerve is pale, and weโ€™ll know more after the 23rd of next month.

On Tuesday, we received the sleep study results. Unfortunately, Mylesโ€™ central sleep apnea has worsened. He needs to go back on overnight oxygen. Ideally, they would have liked him to use a ventilator while he sleeps, but Myles just canโ€™t tolerate it, so we had to settle for oxygen. We were told he stopped breathing several times, each episode lasting 10โ€“15 seconds, and when this happened, his oxygen levels dropped too low ๐Ÿ˜ž

Before cancer, Myles was a healthy little boy. Aside from not reaching all his milestones, he was doing well. Now, after surviving cancer, he has:

โ€ข Central sleep apnea
โ€ข Potential chronic heart failure
โ€ข A non-functioning left kidney
โ€ข A non-functioning spleen
โ€ข Profound hearing loss in both ears
โ€ข Possible limited vision in his left eye
โ€ข Autonomic nerve dysfunction
โ€ข Global developmental delay (this may have been present before cancer, weโ€™re unsure)
โ€ข He still canโ€™t tolerate food orally and is PEG fed
โ€ข He vomits randomly most days

We hold on tightly to the fact that he is still cancer-free ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’› and that he faces everything with the biggest smile. But itโ€™s so hard not knowing what the future holds for our little boy. Every appointment seems to bring more bad news, and that weighs heavily on us ๐Ÿ˜”
