Structured, coach-led strength training designed to protect your health and independence — delivered within a committed, supportive training culture. Barrie Mark Personal Training has been coaching adults in Carlisle since 2007. We specialise in structured, coach-led strength training for adults aged 35+ who want to stay strong and age well. Many of our members join after feeling unsupported or ou

t of place in traditional gyms. Others recognise that as energy dips, stiffness increases or health concerns surface, doing nothing is no longer an option. Our focus is simple: build and preserve strength so you can protect your health, mobility and independence for decades to come. Nothing is left to guesswork. Alongside this, we have built a committed, supportive training culture where members feel respected, encouraged and accountable — not judged. We are a structured personal training facility designed for long-term health and capability.

Mark has been a member with us for 2 years now.
He’s consistent, adaptable, and always willing to take on coaching points to improve his lifts.

It’s always great hearing about Mark’s holidays and everything he gets up to outside the gym, and it’s brilliant seeing how his training helps him keep doing those things confidently and consistently.

One thing Mark does really well is fitting training around his lifestyle rather than trying to force life around training. And more recently, he has decided to switch up his training times from attending the 6pm sessions to the 6am sessions, so he’s got more time in the evening to get out into the Lakes and do the things he enjoys most.

Keep up the great work Mark 💪🥳

Sally has transitioned from simply wanting to 'like' exercising to genuinely loving it at BMPT!

I have been a member for 10 months now, and I am truly back in love with exercise! Slowly but surely, I have gained strength and confidence. All the members are incredibly friendly; I enjoy the chats, smiles, and encouragement I receive from everyone.

I just returned from a short vacation, and I was thrilled to see an improvement in my swimming. I don’t remember ever feeling this strong in the water—working on back-strengthening exercises has definitely paid off.

I'm enjoying the sessions so much that I’m considering adding an extra one to my busy week. Taking time out for myself has improved my mood and reduced my stress levels, which has made my husband very happy!

One of the reasons many people join is to change their perspective on their health. The first stage of change is acceptance and, just like Helen said, “walking through the doors” is often the hardest step. For many people, that step never happens. That is what we want to change.

We want to help more people, just like the members in this video, take control of their health and fitness in a way that feels realistic, supportive, and sustainable.

Could you be next?

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that the reason people exercise tends to change as they get older.

In our 20s and 30s, fitness is often driven by appearance, performance, or pushing ourselves physically.

But once people move into their 40s, 50s and beyond, the conversation usually becomes much more about how they want to live.

People start valuing energy more because everyday life begins to demand more from them than it used to.

They value strength not necessarily to lift huge weights, but to comfortably carry shopping, get up off the floor easier, walk upstairs without feeling exhausted, keep up with grandchildren, or simply feel physically capable day to day.

Confidence changes too.

It becomes less about trying to look a certain way and more about trusting your body again so you can feel comfortable moving and ot hesitating every time something physical comes up because you’re worried about pain, injury, or whether your body can cope with it.

That’s why I believe the real goal of exercise after 40 isn’t simply to “get fit”.

It’s to maintain the quality of your life. To keep doing the things you enjoy to stay independent and feel physically confident. To avoid slowly drifting into a lifestyle where movement becomes harder every year.

What most people actually need is support, structure, consistency, and an environment that helps them keep showing up.

Because long-term health is rarely built through dramatic actions.

It’s usually built through small actions repeated often enough that they eventually become part of who you are.

Andrew has been a long-standing member with us, and it has been an absolute pleasure to see his progression over the years!

He asks questions.
He wants to understand why we do things.
And when adaptations are needed, he embraces them.

Progress in training rarely comes from doing everything perfectly. It comes from staying curious, staying consistent, and being willing to adjust when life, injuries, work, or energy levels shift.

Over the past few months, Andrew has also committed to Run Club alongside his training sessions, adding another challenge to his week and continuing to push himself outside his comfort zone.

No drama.
Just steady effort over time. Keep up the great work, Andrew 💪

One thing we’ve noticed over the years is that many adults stop trusting their body long before their body actually gives up on them.

They become cautious & more careful. This then results in feeling less confident physically, so the simple things start feeling harder than they used to:

Getting off the floor.

Carrying shopping.

Walking upstairs.

Keeping up with grandchildren.

Not because they’re incapable, but because they’ve slowly become disconnected from movement and strength over time.

The problem is that confidence in your body doesn’t usually return by thinking about it more.

It returns through action, through moving regularly & building strength gradually.

Through proving to yourself, week after week, that your body is still capable of more than you thought.

That’s one of the biggest things we see with members here.

At first, people come in wanting to “get fitter”.

But after a few months, what they really gain is trust in themselves again.

And in my opinion, that’s one of the most valuable things exercise can give someone.

Over the last two years, one of the things I’ve been most proud of has been watching our run club grow into a genuine community.

What started as a simple idea, creating a safe, welcoming space for people to run together, has become something far bigger. The aim was never about pace, PBs, or experience levels. It was about helping people move more, build confidence, and feel supported along the way.

We’ve had members join who had never run before and now comfortably complete a 5k or 10k without stopping. Others have gone on to tackle half marathons. Every single achievement matters.

Because in reality, it’s not the times or the speed that count most. It’s showing up consistently. It’s exercising regularly. It’s being part of a group that encourages each other regardless of ability.

Last night marked our final run club before we take a break for the summer, returning again in the autumn/winter.

A special shoutout to a few members who have shown incredible consistency throughout the last 2 years: Martin, Simon, Charlotte, Leah, Ruth and recently in our new training block, Andrew, Sam, and Becks. Your commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Thank you to everyone who has joined us over the last two years. Whether you came once or every week, you’ve helped make the club what it is.

One of the biggest reasons people struggle to stay consistent with exercise is simple: they feel like they’re doing it alone.

They join a gym, get shown around for 20 minutes, and then spend the next few months trying to work out what to do, whether they’re doing it right, and if any of it is actually working.

That’s not how we do things at BMPT.

Every session is fully coach-led from start to finish. You’re not left wandering the gym floor guessing what exercise comes next or whether your technique is correct. A coach is there to guide you, adjust things when needed, and help you train safely and effectively.

For a lot of our members, that support changes everything.

It builds confidence.
It removes the stress and intimidation.
And it makes training something people can actually stick to long term.

Whether someone is completely new to exercise or getting back into a routine after years away, they know they’ll walk into a structured session with clear guidance and support every step of the way.

That’s why our members enjoy training here.

Scott has been training with us since September last year. In this time, we have seen a massive shift in not only his ability in sessions but also his attitude towards his training.

Scott has massively improved in confidence with his movements, and this has shone through in the progress he has made. Even when niggles have presented themselves, usually football-related, he has trusted us to adapt his training and make sure he can get back to playing the sport he loves.

In sessions, we can always rely on him to take note of key coaching points and apply these to his sets. Scott understands the process, and as coaches, we couldn't ask for more!

We can't wait to see what the next year of training brings for Scott. Keep up the great work!

A lot of people assume that if they’re exercising, they should automatically enjoy it.

But that’s not always the case.

One of our newer members recently told me they’d joined another gym before us and quickly realised it wasn’t the right fit.

The sessions were mostly fast-paced circuit training with people half their age.

What they actually needed was something different.

They wanted to improve their strength and mobility, build confidence in their body, and feel capable in day-to-day life again.

That’s the problem with one-size-fits-all fitness. When you try to force everybody into the same approach, you often end up forcing people out altogether — because they feel like they can’t keep up, aren’t fit enough, or simply don’t belong there.

At BMPT, our coaching is built around the individual. We meet people where they’re at, adapt the training to suit them, and focus on helping members move better, feel stronger, and build confidence over time.

If that sounds more like the kind of support you’ve been looking for, have a look through our website to learn more.
