It is with great sadness that we share the funeral details for our much-loved friend and supporter of West Shires, Mo Evans.

Mo has been part of the West Shires story from the very beginning, but our connection with her goes back much further. She had been a client of Hannah’s for 23 years and, over those years, became a dear friend to both Hannah and Cheryl.

From the earliest days of the school, Mo was always willing to support our students with their learning. Many of you will remember her coming in as a client for student treatments, offering encouraging words, reassurance and helpful feedback along the way. She understood how valuable that experience was for students finding their confidence, and she was always so generous with her time and support.

We know that Mo was very fondly thought of by so many of our past and present students, just as she was by all of us at West Shires. She leaves a very special place in the history of our school and in our hearts.

Mo’s public funeral service will take place on Tuesday 15th September at 11.30am at the Royal Oak Chapel of Rest, Johnstown.

In keeping with Mo’s vibrant personality, her family welcome anyone attending to wear colour in her memory, particularly blue, which was her favourite. 💙

And here it is – our full course calendar for the rest of 2026. 🌿

Over the past few weeks we’ve been sharing a little more about each of these courses individually – not just what we teach, but some of the thinking, experience and philosophy behind the way we teach it.

Now it’s lovely to see the whole programme together.

From foundational training for those beginning their journey in complementary therapies, through to refresher days and more advanced CPD for experienced therapists, there’s quite a variety coming up between September and December.

One of the things I’m particularly proud of at West Shires is that we’re not trying to produce therapists who simply follow a sequence they’ve been taught. Across our different subjects and tutors, we want our students to leave understanding their therapy, feeling comfortable asking questions and, importantly, able to take what they’ve learnt into real practice.

Indian Head Massage is one of those treatments that can look deceptively simple from the outside.

But there is much more to it than working on the scalp.

A traditional Indian Head Massage treatment incorporates the upper back, shoulders, neck, head and face – areas where many of our clients appreciate focused touch, particularly when everyday life involves long hours at a desk, driving, caring for others or simply very little opportunity to properly switch off.

What makes it particularly useful within complementary therapy practice is its versatility. It can be offered as a treatment in its own right, and the practical skills can also complement the work of therapists who already offer other hands-on therapies.

Our Indian Head Massage course explores the traditional foundations of the therapy alongside plenty of practical experience, helping students develop a treatment that feels considered, flowing and professional.

And while relaxation is certainly an important part of Indian Head Massage, that doesn’t make it “just” a relaxation treatment.

Creating space for someone to stop, settle and receive nurturing therapeutic touch has value in itself.

Where someone feels their symptoms isn’t always the only place worth looking.

The lower body gives us some particularly good examples of this.

The foot influences how we load through the leg. The hip responds to what is happening above and below it. Movement at the pelvis can alter the demands placed elsewhere. Fascia forms part of this interconnected picture alongside muscles, joints, the nervous system and other tissues.

That doesn’t mean every restriction has a hidden fascial cause – bodies are far more complicated than that.

But it does mean that, as therapists, there is value in looking beyond one isolated area.

Our Lower Body Myofascial Release course builds on our MFR pathway, with practical work focused around the hips, pelvis and lower limbs. We explore hands-on myofascial techniques alongside movement, observation and clinical reasoning, considering how and when these approaches may be useful within treatment.

For me, this is where further training becomes particularly interesting: not simply collecting more techniques, but developing different ways of thinking about the body in front of you.

Reiki Level 1 is often just the beginning of someone’s relationship with Reiki.

After that initial training, there is time to practise, reflect and become more familiar with what Reiki means within your own life and, for some, within the work they offer to others.

Reiki Level 2 is the natural progression from those foundations.

During the course we build on the practices introduced at Level 1, introduce the Level 2 symbols and explore their traditional uses, while giving students the opportunity to develop their practice further in a relaxed and supportive environment.

One of the things we value at West Shires is allowing space for different experiences and perspectives. Reiki is a traditional complementary practice, and we teach it as such – respectfully, without feeling the need to make exaggerated promises about what it can do.

For some students, Level 2 forms part of their professional development. For others, the motivation is entirely personal. Both are equally valid reasons to continue learning.

The longer you work as a massage therapist, the more you realise that no two bodies really ask for the same treatment.

A familiar sequence can be a useful foundation, but experienced practice often means knowing when to change it – when to slow down, work differently, introduce another technique or leave something alone altogether.

Our Advanced Massage Skills course is designed for qualified therapists who want to broaden the way they work and develop a more adaptable approach to treatment.

Across three days, we explore a wider range of hands-on techniques and, importantly, how they can be incorporated into massage rather than simply learnt in isolation.

It’s about developing your practical toolkit, but also your decision-making as a therapist: considering what you are feeling beneath your hands, what the client is presenting with and what may be most appropriate on that particular day.

Because advanced massage isn’t necessarily about doing more.

Often, it’s about having more options – and knowing when to use them.

Sometimes it isn’t about learning something new. Sometimes it’s about reconnecting with skills you already have.

Therapists step away from massage for all sorts of reasons. Career changes, family commitments, illness, or simply moving into a different area of complementary therapy can mean that hands-on massage hasn’t been part of everyday practice for a while.

Your qualification hasn’t disappeared – but it’s completely understandable if your confidence feels a little rusty.

Our Massage Refresher is designed for qualified therapists who want some dedicated time to revisit their practical skills in a supportive environment. We’ll look again at core massage techniques, treatment flow, body mechanics and safe, effective practice, with plenty of opportunity to practise and ask the questions that inevitably crop up once you get your hands working again.

There’s no expectation that you should remember everything perfectly before you walk through the door.

I know I used to know this…”

It’s something we hear surprisingly often from therapists returning to a skill they haven’t used for a while.

You may still recognise the reflexes, remember much of your sequence and understand the principles of reflexology – but when you haven’t practised regularly, it can be difficult to trust what you remember.

That’s exactly what a refresher course is for.

Our Reflexology Refresher gives previously qualified reflexologists the opportunity to revisit their practical skills without the pressure of feeling they should already have all the answers.

We’ll return to treatment techniques and sequence, consultation and safe practice, with plenty of hands-on time to help everything begin to feel familiar again.

And often, it comes back more quickly than you expect.

There’s absolutely nothing unprofessional about refreshing a qualification you haven’t used for some time. In fact, recognising when you would benefit from revisiting your skills before returning to practice is a very professional decision to make.

If your reflexology qualification has been sitting quietly in the background for a while, this could be a lovely way to bring it back into use.
