This week, a member stopped me to talk about how much their yoga practice had helped them.
They initially came because of a significant back issue. Surgery had been discussed as a likely next step, but they wanted to explore whether yoga could help. Alongside this, they were going through a really stressful period in their life.
They made time for several classes a week and practised small sequences at home. Over time, their back improved, and they told me they’ve been able to avoid surgery—something they were understandably delighted about, But something else had surprised them.
After a couple of weeks away from yoga, they noticed more stiffness. They also noticed that their HRV—heart rate variability—had dropped from around 75 to 43 during a particularly stressful spell. While practising regularly, it had been much higher.
This person loves the gym too, but that change made them reflect on what yoga was giving them beyond the physical benefits.
We chatted about the breathing, the movement and the space a practice creates to pause and pay attention to how we feel.
HRV is influenced by lots of things, so we can’t put that change down to yoga alone. But, for this person, it was another way of noticing how different they felt when their practice was part of their week.
I think many of us first come to yoga for a physical reason. We want help with our back, to feel stronger or to move more comfortably.
Then, as we keep showing up, we begin to notice other things: how we breathe, how we respond to stress, and how much we value that time for ourselves.
Those conversations mean so much to me. Hearing what someone’s practice brings to their everyday life is such a lovely reminder of why I teach. 💜

We really have listened to how much you get from these retreats and we have taken all your feedback on board and we are going to aim to offer you two dates for 2027, One Spring, One Autumn. Dates will be published next week and we don’t want to draw attention to the ‘C’ word and the man in the red suit .. but maybe that’s what you might ask for lol
Our theme will always be ‘Retreat Your Way’ and although things will be seasonally tweaked the concept of Retreating Your Way will always be our priority.
Any of you girls spot yourself here ? Thank you guys for making the Retreat an absolute pleasure , we hope you had the best experience thank you for hosting us so perfectly .johanne.jervis

Can we admit that being that person who says they ‘never sit still’, ‘never rest’ ‘never relax’, is ‘always busy’ is not a flex, not a badge of honour , not something to aspire to , but acknowledge that perhaps it’s a red flag letting us know that we need to start to be more attentive, more aware. That perhaps we need to learn to intentionally rest, to be more focused, to be able to quiet the busy chatter of our frazzled brains. Perhaps it’s time to explore what might be making us uncomfortable with being still, with being present in the moment, what is it that has us so distracted that we can’t allow our bodies and minds to do what they need to do? Why do you struggle to intentionally rest?
Listen, stress isn’t always bad, to be active, productive isn’t bad , not when it’s done with conscious choice and awareness, but when it gets to the point that we ‘can’t be still’ when we need constant distraction, when it gets to where our nervous system is shot, when we’re anxious and when things are starting to feel out of whack , that’s when we need to pause and check in with what’s happening.
How often are you intentionally still and focused (this is different from sleep)?
How often do you find yourself reaching for the phone, scrolling with no purpose ?
How loud, busy are your thoughts ? How distracted / tired do you feel?
How often are you fully focused on the one thing that you’re doing ?
Life is busy. Busy can be fab. But if you don’t find balance between doing and simply being then it will show up.
Yoga addresses so much more than the physical, it’s a deeper practice, it teaches us not to be led by the fluctuating thoughts, it teaches us to anchor to breath, it teaches us to notice to pay attention ‘self study’
Here’s the thing that part isn’t ‘sexy’ or easy to show on socials as something trendy, and you know it takes time , it takes practice, you might think it’s ‘boring’ and because the results aren’t instant you undervalue it.
But guys, the benefits you will feel are huge !
If we accept that all the physical stuff takes practice and patience then why can’t we accept that the ‘mind’ ‘brain’ ‘nervous system’ takes time , practice and patience too.

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that rest had to be earned.
Finish the work.
Do the training.
Sort everyone else out.
Get through the list.
Then you can stop.
But recovery isn’t a reward for reaching exhaustion.
It’s part of looking after ourselves.
Whether you’re 25, 45 or 65, learning to recognise when your body and mind need a little less can be incredibly valuable.
Sometimes yoga is strong and challenging.
Sometimes it’s slow and quiet.
Sometimes the most useful thing we practise is simply stopping.
You don’t have to earn your rest.

Taking a moment to just acknowledge and appreciate this.
Today Joan attended her 1500th class with us. That’s over 1500 hours of yoga, over 10 years, an average of three classes per week.
And this is about more than yoga, Joan isn’t just a member of the Loft, she’s a huge part of our community, she’s supported lots of people through life’s up and downs, she’s been supported by the community too. We’ve all shared ten years of life and all the experiences it brings . Here’s to your next 1500 hours of Yoga. We appreciate you so much , thank you
