t and independence without compromise. About Feet has a compact but adequate set-up to ensure clients are treated with the same quality of care they would get in a private consultation room. About Feet treats a range of foot and lower limb conditions, with their priority being to change the way people think about their feet. They aim to minimise ongoing problems and provide customers with optimal foot health, which they believe leads to improved overall health and well-being. About Feet also offers nail surgery; nail reconstruction; biomechanical assessment; orthoses; and podiatric acupuncture in addition to standard routine foot care. The clinic is located on the ground floor, with off-street parking being available. It is beside Carrickfergus train and bus station and is a short walk from the centre of Carrickfergus and its associated amenities.

Why do your feet swell in hot weather? β˜€οΈπŸ‘£

With the recent warm weather, you may have noticed your shoes feeling tighter by the end of the day.

You're not imagining it.

When temperatures rise, blood vessels naturally expand to help cool the body. This can cause fluid to collect in the feet and ankles, leading to swelling and discomfort.

You may notice:
β€’ shoes feeling tighter than usual
β€’ sock marks around your ankles
β€’ feet feeling heavy or achy by evening

Simple things that can help include:
πŸ’§ staying hydrated
🚢 moving regularly if sitting for long periods
🦢 elevating your feet when resting
πŸ‘Ÿ wearing comfortable, well-fitting footwear

If swelling is persistent, painful, or unusual for you, it's always worth getting it checked.

Summer sandals aren't always your feet's best friend πŸ‘£β˜€οΈ

The sunshine arrives and out come the sandals.

While lighter footwear can feel wonderful in warm weather, it can sometimes reveal problems that winter shoes have been hiding.

We often see:
β€’ cracked heels becoming more noticeable
β€’ hard skin building up faster
β€’ corns becoming painful
β€’ toes rubbing against straps
β€’ less support leading to tired, aching feet

The good news is that most of these issues can be managed with simple podiatry care.

Your feet work hard all year round. Summer is often when they finally get noticed.

What actually happens during ingrown toenail treatment? πŸ‘£

One of the biggest worries people have about ingrown toenails is not knowing what to expect.

Many imagine the treatment will be painful or complicated, so they put it off far longer than they should. In reality, most ingrown toenails are much more manageable when seen early.

The first step is simply assessing the nail and the surrounding skin. We look at what is causing the problem, whether there is swelling or infection, and how painful it has become.

In many cases, treatment involves gently relieving the pressure from the part of the nail that is digging into the skin. This can often bring significant relief very quickly.

We will also talk through:
β€’ what may have caused it
β€’ how to prevent it returning
β€’ the best way to manage your nails going forward
β€’ footwear or pressure issues that may be contributing

If the nail is badly ingrown or repeatedly causing problems, we can also discuss longer-term treatment options and explain everything clearly beforehand.

Most importantly, treatment is approached calmly and gently. We understand people are often anxious before their first appointment, especially if the toe has become very sore.

The earlier an ingrown toenail is treated, the easier it usually is to manage.

If you’re struggling with a painful toenail, we’re here to help.

Please don’t feel embarrassed about your feet πŸ‘£πŸ’›

This is something we hear all the time:

β€œI was embarrassed to come in.”
β€œI didn’t want anyone seeing them.”
β€œI thought I’d left it too long.”

The truth is, there is very little we haven’t seen over the years.

Thick nails, hard skin, corns, verrucas, cracked heels, feet that have become difficult to manage… these are all extremely common problems and exactly what podiatrists are here for.

Most people spend far more time worrying about coming in than they do once they’re actually here.

At About Feet, you’ll always be treated with kindness, professionalism, and without judgement. It doesn’t matter how long something has been bothering you or how your feet look right now. The important thing is getting you comfortable again.

You do not need β€œperfect feet” to visit a podiatrist. Quite the opposite.

If something has been worrying you, this is your reminder not to let embarrassment stop you from getting the help you deserve.

Worried about your child’s feet? πŸ‘£πŸ’›

As parents, we notice the little things.

Walking differently.
Complaining of sore feet.
Avoiding certain shoes.
A verruca that doesn’t seem to go away.
An ingrown toenail becoming red or painful.

These problems are very common in children and teenagers, but we understand they can still be worrying when you’re not sure what’s causing them or whether they’ll settle on their own.

At About Feet, we can help children with things like:
β€’ verrucas
β€’ ingrown toenails
β€’ sore or uncomfortable feet
β€’ hard skin or pressure points
β€’ concerns about walking or foot position

We know that visiting somewhere new can feel daunting for children, so appointments are always approached gently, calmly, and at their pace.

Often, parents tell us they feel relieved simply having things properly checked and explained.

If something about your child’s feet has been concerning you, we’re always happy to help.

One of the most common things we hear from people in Carrickfergus is:

β€œI’ve been meaning to get this looked at for ages.”

Usually it’s something small at first.
A toenail becoming difficult to cut.
Hard skin starting to feel sore.
A corn that becomes noticeable every time you walk into town.

Life gets busy, and people quietly work around discomfort for much longer than they need to.

That’s why most of what we do in podiatry is not dramatic or urgent. It’s simple, professional care that helps people walk more comfortably and confidently again.

We regularly help with:
β€’ painful or thickened nails
β€’ corns and hard skin
β€’ verrucas
β€’ cracked heels
β€’ general foot discomfort
β€’ routine foot care and home visits

If something has been bothering you for a while, it may be time to stop putting up with it.

There’s a simple way many people in Carrickfergus notice something is changing with their feet.

A walk into town feels longer than it used to.
You stop more often along the promenade.
You start choosing the shortest route rather than the nicest one.

It rarely happens overnight.

Small things like hard skin, pressure, sore nails, or aching feet tend to build gradually until they start affecting everyday routines.

We often hear people say:
β€œI thought it was just part of getting older.”

Sometimes it is simply pressure or discomfort that can be managed much more easily than expected.

Whether it’s walking around the Castle, heading into the town centre, or enjoying the seafront on a brighter day, comfortable feet make a real difference to how much you enjoy getting out and about.

If your feet are starting to dictate your plans rather than support them, we’re here to help.

🚨 DID YOU KNOW?
If you live with diabetes, your feet need a little extra attention.

Diabetes can affect the nerves and circulation in your feet. This means you may not always feel small cuts, blisters, pressure areas, or rubbing from shoes. What starts as something tiny can become more serious if it is missed or left too long.

That is why regular foot checks matter.

Your feet work hard every day, but with diabetes, they may not always give you the warning signs you expect.

πŸ‘£ HERE IS A SIMPLE DAILY ROUTINE TO TRY:

πŸ” Check your feet daily
Look for redness, swelling, cuts, blisters, cracks, or anything that looks different.

🧴 Moisturise dry skin
Apply cream to dry areas, but avoid putting cream between the toes.

🧦 Wear clean, well-fitting socks
Avoid tight seams or anything that rubs.

πŸ‘Ÿ Check inside your shoes
A small stone, rough seam, or folded insole can cause damage without you realising.

βœ‚οΈ Be careful with nail cutting
Avoid cutting too short or down the sides. If nails are difficult to manage, get professional help.

πŸ’‘ Please don’t ignore changes

If you notice a sore, broken skin, colour change, swelling, discharge, or a wound that is not healing, it is important to get advice quickly.

At About Feet, we provide gentle, professional diabetic foot care to help keep your feet safe, comfortable, and well looked after.

Ever wondered why your toenails change over time? πŸ‘£

🚨 πƒπˆπƒ π˜πŽπ” πŠππŽπ– – Toenails don’t just β€œget thicker with age” for no reason.

They can change due to repeated pressure from shoes, small knocks over the years, reduced circulation, or even how the nail grows naturally. This can cause nails to become thicker, harder to cut, or uncomfortable in footwear.

Unlike fingernails, toenails grow much more slowly and take more impact day to day, which is why changes tend to build up gradually.

Every step you take puts pressure through your toes. Over time, your nails adapt to that.

πŸ‘£ HERE IS A SIMPLE NAIL CARE ROUTINE TO TRY:

If your nails are becoming harder to manage, here are a few simple things that help:

βœ‚οΈ Trim carefully: Cut nails straight across. Avoid cutting down the sides, as this can lead to discomfort or ingrown nails.

πŸ‘Ÿ Check footwear: Make sure shoes aren’t pressing on the toes. Even slight pressure over time can affect nail shape.

🧼 Keep them clean and dry: This helps reduce the risk of infection or further thickening.

πŸ•°οΈ Don’t leave them too long: Overgrown nails are more likely to catch, split, or cause pressure when walking.

πŸ’‘ 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐑𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐑𝐞π₯𝐩

If nails have become thick, painful, or difficult to cut, it’s best not to struggle with them yourself.

In clinic, we can safely reduce and manage nails, relieve pressure, and make walking more comfortable again.
