A common hypnosis myth is that people can get “stuck” in hypnosis.
In reality, hypnosis is a perfectly natural state of focused attention — a bit like becoming absorbed in a book or film.
Even if a hypnotherapist stopped talking completely, you’d simply drift back to ordinary awareness, relax into normal rest, or decide to open your eyes and carry on with your day.

Have you ever wondered what happens in the brain during hypnosis?
Research suggests that the part of the mind responsible for self-reflection and mental chatter quiets down a little.
In simple terms, that means you’re often more focused, less distracted, and better able to pay attention to what actually matters — a bit like turning down background noise.

Not everyone who comes for hypnosis is looking for deep therapeutic work or major life changes.
Sometimes people simply want an hour where they can properly relax, switch off for a while, and give their mind a bit of breathing space.
Relaxation sessions are a way to slow things down, especially if stress has been building up for a long time.

Hypnosis really isn’t new. Far from it.
Ancient Egyptians used trance-like states in healing rituals over 3,000 years ago, and Greek temples even had “sleep chambers” where people received healing suggestions while resting.
Modern hypnotherapy is rooted much more firmly in psychology and neuroscience, but the idea that focused attention can influence how we feel and respond has been around for a very long time.

Summer often changes our routines without us really noticing. Lighter evenings, warmer air, more time outside — even small shifts in environment can affect how tense or settled we feel.
One simple calming habit is to deliberately slow down for a few minutes outdoors in the evening, paying attention to temperature, sounds, and light levels rather than staying inside with screens and noise right up until bedtime.
It sounds very simple, but giving the nervous system quieter sensory input before sleep can make a noticeable difference over time.
Small changes often do.

A glamorous behind-the-scenes update...
Our mysterious loo blockage turned out to be a plastic cleaner-block cage lodged neatly across the drain. Not exactly what anyone expected.
The good news is that everything is fixed, we have a brand new loo, and normal service has resumed.
What's the strangest thing you've ever found when solving a problem?

A lot of people try to push through stress or anxiety and just keep going.
But often, the harder you push, the more it seems to stick around.
Taking a slightly different approach — one that works with how your mind responds — can make things feel more manageable.

It’s not always obvious when therapy might help.
Some signs can be quite everyday things, like:
• feeling on edge more often than usual
• finding it hard to switch off
• going over the same thoughts repeatedly
• feeling a bit stuck without knowing why
It doesn’t have to be extreme to be worth looking at.

I’ll be running a QPR Su***de Awareness and Prevention session on Zoom on Thursday 21st May (6-8 pm).
QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer: it’s a simple, practical steps that can help you support someone who may be struggling.
It’s often described as a bit like CPR, but for mental health.
Open to anyone: you don’t need to be a therapist.

One of the things that sits quietly in the background of therapy is confidentiality.
It means you can talk things through without worrying about where that information might go, and allows the focus to stay where it should be — on you.
It’s not something that gets talked about much, but it makes a real difference.
