Today we are remembering the sculptor Henry Moore, who gave his name to our surgery and died 40 years ago today.

Henry Moore was born on Roundhill Road, Castleford, and went to Leeds College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. He was one of the most important and influential British artists of the twentieth century. He produced more than 10,000 artworks, including sculptures, drawings, tapestries and textiles but became best-known for his semi-abstract, monumental bronzes which can be seen all over the world as public works of art, and of course he also gave his name to our surgery!

His sculptures are all around the UK including the Tate Britain and St Paul’s Cathedral in London; he also gave his name to the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, which is free to visit, and is one of the largest sculpture galleries in Europe. However his sculptures can also be seen even closer to home at Wakefield’s Yorkshire Sculpture Park. He died on 31st August 1986.

For pharmacy support over the bank holiday, Asda at Glasshoughton is open until 9pm on Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on both Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday. Excel pharmacy in Normanton is also open on Sunday 11-4pm.

We have a high number of patients who choose not to take part in the national Bowel Cancer Screening programme.

Bowel cancer screening is a quick and easy test you do at home that checks for signs of bowel cancer. It’s offered to people aged 50 to 74. You are automatically sent a sample pack, and you collect the sample at home and send it by post to be tested. You will get a letter within 2 weeks telling you the result.

It can help find cancer early, and before you have any symptoms, which may mean it’s easier to treat.

If you think you’re eligible for bowel cancer screening but you’ve not been invited, or if you have had your test kit but lost it/discarded it, please call the bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 6060 for a replacement!

As part of a new series of posts, we will be publishing our monthly figures to show how Henry Moore Clinic is performing, how many appointments we offered and how many appointments were not attended. They are published slightly in arrears, to give us time to collate them together, so today we are looking at the month of July 2026.

We have two new permanent salaried doctors joining Henry Moore Clinic at the end of August who will help to provide extra appointments for our patients. Dr Abraar Dabhad and Dr Jonathan Keane were both trainees with us and we are delighted to welcome them back as permanent staff. It is also changeover time for our trainees, and although we say goodbye to 3 trainee doctors we are welcoming 4 new trainee doctors as well.

30 years ago today, Dr Nadim Nayyar joined Riverside Medical Centre and he is celebrating that impressive milestone today. We are lucky at Henry Moore Clinic to benefit from close ties with Riverside which is of course one of our neighbouring practices in Castleford, but also a member of the same PCN (Primary Care Network) and Dr Nayyar and Dr Blackamore are joint clinical directors of our PCN. Congratulations Nadim!
