“Is my prescription ready yet?”
Fair question, and the honest answer is that most of the wait happens somewhere we cannot see either. So here is the whole journey, from behind the counter.
You request it. Usually through your GP surgery — your NHS account, an app, or a phone call.
The surgery authorises it. This part is not us, and it is the part that varies most.
It arrives with us electronically, and we make it up.
You collect it, or have it delivered.
Two things that cut the whole loop out: repeat dispensing and electronic repeat dispensing. If your prescriber sets one up, a batch is authorised for up to twelve months and comes to us automatically at set intervals — so you can ask us directly instead of going back to the surgery every time. Worth asking your surgery whether you are eligible.
Genuinely stuck out of hours? NHS 111 can arrange an emergency supply in clinically exceptional circumstances.
And one habit worth keeping: check the bag before you leave the counter, and hand back anything you do not need.
