Weight-bearing X-rays capture images while you are standing, allowing gravity to exert load on your joints. They are crucial because standard non-weight-bearing (lying down) X-rays can hide structural misalignments and artificially inflate joint space widths.

Syndactyly, commonly known as webbed toes, is a congenital condition where two or more toes are fused together. It affects approximately 1 in 2,000 to 3,000 individuals and is usually painless. For the majority of people, the condition is purely cosmetic and does not affect ability to walk, run, or swim. If the fusion causes physical discomfort or significant psychological stress, reconstructive surgery can be performed. Have you come across this ?

Ankle Fusion or Total Replacement?
Ankle fusion (arthrodesis) eliminates pain by permanently stiffening the ankle joint, but it alters foot biomechanics. Because the ankle no longer moves, the subtalar and midfoot joints are forced to absorb extra stress and motion. This unnatural overload often causes premature wear and adjacent joint arthritis. When the ankle joint is fused, the normal rolling and flexing motion of the foot is lost. The joints below and in front of the ankle—specifically the subtalar joint and the talonavicular joint—attempt to compensate for the lost motion. Over time, this repetitive, increased biomechanical stress damages the cartilage, leading to accelerated arthritic degeneration in these adjacent joints.
