Delighted to see the first elderflowers blooming. Their scent in June is so uplifting.

We will likely make elderflower cordial / lemonade / champagne and also potentially dry for tea!

Eating a little bit of wild each day... This morning it was bramble buds. Yum. Children eat these like sweets.

Yesterday it was wild garlic buds, along with primroses. 🌼

Awareness of, harvesting and eating wild food helps to sustain my connection to nature. It is never boring. Always a joy, and every season offers something different.

And with this awareness and connection to wild food, it deepens my love of nature as a whole - my appreciation and knowledge of birds, insects, fungi, trees and flowers through the seasons seeps into my bones and is at the heart of my existence.

Forever grateful and in awe of Mother Earth, for her help to keep me present, rather than losing my head to the external crap going on, of which I cannot control.

So, I focus on what I can control, and what brings me daily joy. Thank you, Gaia. And thank you, beautiful children. 💚🌎🕊🐝🥀🌿

So hopeful and heartwarming to see beautiful Primroses! One of my favourite Spring blooms (and it's also our daughters middle name). 🌼

Primrose / Primula Vulgaris
Parts used for food: Flowers and leaves
Habitat: Fields, gardens, woodlands
Month to collect: Late February to May

The sheer beauty of the pale, buttery yellow blossoms, and the scent! Oh! What a delight for the senses - even their petals are velvety soft. Primroses glitter the edges of fields, paths and gardens. The bees are equally rapt with their emergence.

Our first forays in Spring are around the local fields. We often follow the hedge lines rather than the paths, and, if you were to take a bird’s eye view, you’d see us dotted along the hedgeline, squatting to nibble a primrose!

💚 Health Properties of Primrose:

Aside from its sweet, honey-like taste and the joy this brings, primrose is sometimes prescribed to help alleviate stress and anxiety. The leaves of the plant contain vitamin C and other minerals.

💚 How we enjoy Primrose:

Infuse primrose flowers in honey, make nourishing herbal tea for a calming effect, get creative and crystallise the flowers for cakes, or add petals and leaves raw to salads.

Of course, you could just simply admire them as they grow and choose not to pick. Instead, take the velvety petals between your fingertips and feel them, bend down to the earth and inhale their fragrance, close your eyes and send gratitude to these beautiful jewels.

We only pick what we need and when there is an abundance, otherwise leaving for the humble bumbles to enjoy. 🐝

Spring is quietly approaching, and the first signs of life are appearing all around us - here are a few things you can look out for...

🌿 Growth on trees - buds, tiny leaves, blossom, catkins.

🦅 Birdsong - the beautiful blackbird is singing at dawn and dusk - a sure sign that Spring is near.

🌷 Shoots pushing through the earth - look out for the joyous daffodils, bluebell shoots, fresh cleavers (AKA sticky w**d - which is a cleansing herb for Spring!), new nettle growth, and soon - wild garlic!

🐸 Frog and toad spawn in ponds!

I’ve been preparing some new ways to share the soothing and medicinal power of nature with you this Spring.

Soon, I’ll be offering Walks with Purpose - gentle, slow, seasonal walks where we pause, notice, learn and connect.

These walks are for anyone who wants to slow down, discover wild medicinal and edible plants, and let nature bestow her restorative power!

I will share more in the coming weeks. 🌸

All the cormorants!
The sky, the sky, the sky
There is hope in the sky
Always
The freedom and medicine of nature.
My son, and winter sun.
And soon
The primroses will be here
The blackbird has begun
to call forth Spring
And she is coming.
