The practice changes with us. 🤍

As I approach 20 years of teaching yoga on Monday, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about what it means to have a lifelong practice.

Over the years I’ve watched students arrive on their mats through pregnancy, parenthood, illness, grief, menopause, anxiety, joy, loss and enormous life changes.

I’ve lived through plenty of those seasons myself.

And one thing I know is that our practice cannot remain the same when we don’t remain the same.

My own practice has taken many different forms over the years. At times I’ve spent more time with āsana; at others, meditation, prāṇāyāma, Yoga Nidra, mantra or simply sitting quietly have been what I’ve needed.

Sometimes I’ve practised every day. Sometimes life has meant my practice has been much smaller and quieter.

None of those ways of practising has been more yoga than another.

I think that’s one of the gifts of practising for a long time — gradually letting go of what we think our practice should look like and learning to listen to what is actually needed.

On Monday it will be exactly 20 years since I taught my first yoga class.

Twenty years of teaching — and so much learning along the way.

September feels particularly special this year… 🤍

A new month, a new term beginning next week — and a rather big milestone for me.

On 7th September, I’ll have been teaching yoga for 20 years.

Twenty years. I’m not quite sure how that happened!

This week I’m going to share a few memories and reflections from those years — how my teaching has changed, how my own relationship with yoga has evolved, and some of the people and moments that have been part of the journey.

And beautifully, the anniversary itself falls on the first day of our new term.

It feels rather lovely to be beginning another year of teaching on the very date that it all began.

So here’s to September, new beginnings, returning to practice — and a little looking back too. 🤍

🍂 SEPTEMBER AT YOGA WISE

September always feels like a little new beginning.

A return to routine, a return to rhythm — and perhaps a return to your mat.

Our new term begins Monday 7th September, with classes running throughout the week at Yoga Wise Studio.

And if you’re completely new to yoga, you are very welcome too. You don’t need to be flexible, experienced or already “good at yoga” to begin.

At Yoga Wise, our classes are about much more than simply moving the body.

✨ 90-minute classes
✨ Mindful asana
✨ Prāṇāyāma & breathwork
✨ Meditation & Yoga Nidra
✨ Yoga philosophy & Ayurveda woven into our practice
✨ Small, friendly classes with individual guidance

This is yoga as a whole practice — time each week to move, breathe, slow down and reconnect with yourself.

Whether you’re returning after the summer, looking for a more meaningful yoga practice, or stepping onto a yoga mat for the very first time, there’s a place for you here.

There is no perfect practice — only the practice that meets you where you are.

I’ve been having some conversations with students on our Foundation Course recently about what it really means to have a consistent yoga practice.

And it’s had me reflecting on my own.

After more than 25 years of practising yoga, I can say with certainty that my practice has not always looked the same.

There have been seasons of lots of asana and seasons of very little. Times when pranayama has been central, times when Yoga Nidra has been what I’ve needed most, and times when meditation, mantra, philosophy or self-study have come to the forefront.

Because a consistent yoga practice doesn’t necessarily mean consistently doing the same thing.

In fact, the longer I practise, the more I understand that yoga isn’t simply something we do on a mat.

How we live is the practice.

How we respond when life doesn’t go to plan.
How we treat ourselves and other people.
How aware we are of our thoughts, habits and reactions.
How willing we are to pause, reflect and begin again.
How we navigate the joyful seasons and the difficult ones.

Of course, getting onto our mat matters. Asana, pranayama, meditation, Yoga Nidra, mantra and all the other practices give us the tools. They create a space in which we can practise awareness, steadiness, presence and self-study.

But the real invitation is to take what we discover there with us when we step off the mat and back into our lives.

Over the years my practice has changed and evolved alongside me, supporting me in very different ways through very different seasons.

What I’ve come to understand is that yoga is a lifelong practice. A relationship with practice that grows and changes with us, until yoga becomes less about something we do and more about how we live, moment by moment.

And perhaps consistency isn’t about doing the same practice every day.

Perhaps it’s about continuing that relationship — through all the changing seasons of our lives.

There is no perfect practice — only the practice that meets you where you are.
