Insect bites or stings can be really annoying, but they’re usually harmless. Sometimes, they can get infected though.

If you’re worried, the pharmacist is the best person to visit, it’s quick and free to make an appointment. See your pharmacist if….

•⁠ ⁠the skin around the bite or sting feels hot when you touch it and looks red
•⁠ ⁠It’s painful
•⁠ ⁠The area looks swollen
•⁠ ⁠There’s pus or fluid coming out of the bite or sting 🐜

You need 2 doses, given at least 4 weeks (28 days) apart, for the best protection.

You may be eligible for the free MenB vaccine if you are:

✅ 17 to 18 years old and born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008

✅ Under 25 and starting university or moving into eligible residential further education for the first time in autumn 2026

How is Meningitis B transmitted?

Transmission requires close, prolonged contact such as coughing, sneezing or kissing.

Sharing drinks and vapes can also spread infection.

The bacteria that causes meningococcal disease is often carried harmlessly in the nose and throat, with only around 10% of carriers ever becoming ill.

In adolescents and young adults, carriage can be higher, with large UK studies reporting rates of 7%-18%, depending on the year and setting.

The Meningitis B vaccine is available on the NHS free of charge subject to eligibility.
