I genuinely love this stuff. The human body is incredible — designed to move, adapt and become stronger when given the right opportunity. So often pain or restriction isn’t just about where it hurts… it’s about how the body is compensating elsewhere. Understanding movement is key.

If a “mobility” area becomes stiff:
➡️ Nearby “stability” regions may move too much

If a “stability” area becomes weak:
➡️ Other joints compensate and become overloaded

Examples:
❌ Stiff hips → extra stress on the lower back
❌ Poor ankle mobility → increased knee strain
❌ Weak core stability → spinal overcompensation

This exercise is a Standing Lunge, and whilst it may not look particularly exciting, it's one of those movements that carries over beautifully into everyday life.

Every time we walk up a hill, climb the stairs, get down to pick something up, or catch ourselves when we lose our balance, we're relying on strength, stability and control through the legs and hips.

I love exercises like this because they're not just about working muscles — they're about helping us move more confidently and comfortably in our daily lives.

At Portland Pilates & Physio, we're always looking at how movement in the studio can make a difference outside the studio too.

Strong enough for life. That's the goal. ❤️
